Measure the thickness of the Ti. If it measures .150" it is a "first edition". If the Ti measures .125" it is a current edition.
There were no problems with the first run. The reason for the switch was that Camillus could not get enough Ti .150" thick to maintain normal production. So, they switched to the .125" Ti. My guess would be that 99% of knife users will never use a CUDA Maxx hard enough to notice the difference in strength between the two thicknesses. For the average user, the switch to the thinner Ti is probably a greater benefit than disadvantage. Thinner profile in the pocket and a bit of a weight reduction.
Also, Camillus never actually named the thicker handled Maxxes as first edition. The switch to thinner Ti was just an obvious point of reference for the knife enthusiast.
Didn't see this post until after I answered in General Forum. A little cut and paste for convenience.
