Culling Musings

Lol the luring imagery of minimalism.
Certainly sounds good, sounds responsible, sounds MANLY even
But the problem is, as stated above. You never know when your circumstances will change.
New job? Unexpected move? Injury or illness

Heck, how many times you sell or give something away and think later. Dang it! I wish I still had that.

Perhaps the wiser choice is to recognize the issue and stop buying wants and stick to needs. Certainly eliminate the obvious daydream stuff. Most of us are too old to become a paratrooper
And zombie or cordycep infected are not likely to actually materialize.
But ya never know when you wanna go hiking or camping and ..ya know...just in case

I'm not talking about minimalism. Decluttering/ downsizing doesn't always mean minimalism.

My circumstances have changed, not for the better, and will likely not improve, hence the decluttering/ downsizing in all aspects of my life, not just knife stuff. You know, the kind of stuff you might want to do to try and make estate cleanup easier for those that have to deal with it, but not to the point you live out of a suitcase in a small room with one bare lightbulb.

Wants vs needs. If knives weren't an enjoyable hobby I wouldn't have anything other than a fixed-blade and either a SAK or multi-tool. And I'd never have joined this forum. And since this is one of the last things in my life I can actually enjoy, if I want to spend a few dollars here or there to try out a knife, I think I'll continue to do so. And dispose of knives I won't be keeping as I see fit.

I think I missed something
And by missing that particular piece of information my post is coming across as insensitive

So I will just man up and apologize.

I am sorry. I think I spoke without the relevant information and made an ass out of myself.
No harm or insult was intended

One of the problems with internet comms is the lack of verbal and visual cues we have when interacting IRL. I'm sure if we were talking face to face, saying what you posted, partway through your comments you would have noticed something and stopped and inquired whether or not you were missing something. No harm, no foul, apology not needed but accepted and appreciated.

I tend to be verbose, trying to make sure people understand exactly what I mean, which leads to stuff not being read (proverbial wall of text reaction). So I try to be more pithy. That can come across as being terse, rude, or even angry. Even when not intended. Again with the lack of verbal/ visuals. My response was meant to explain why I'm doing things, if it came across as angry posting, my apologies to you as well.

OldHercDude OldHercDude I think it's a very good focus you're getting, it's part of an evolution in taste which a good worthwhile collection should get after a while. It decreases clutter & burdens too, your selection is excellent and demonstrates this.

Myself, I'm veering towards quite a simple formula which might work for a while- but knives are seductive attractions and being proof against them can be daunting ;)

Lately, it's been a single blade carbon or stainless including modern steel, these are often European mated to a Stockman in the opposite steel CASE, Böker , sometimes Buck and soon I hope Queen Cutlery. Keep a handful of fixed knives- not very large ones either and this seems to please me a lot, that's the main point too.

Thanks Will.

Sounds like you have a path figured out, good luck on your search for the Queens.

Still finding my "happy place". I'm much closer now, but not quite there. Soon. :)
