Cult of the one knife man

I can see the interest in doing the one knife thing, I think. I guess I did it when I was a young man, although it wasn't intentional.
I carried a Schrade Ulster Old Timer (58 OT) small stockman for a decade or so, maybe longer, mostly because it did the job for me. I didn't even think about needing or wanting something different.
It seems I got the one knife thing out of my system. Now it's a pleasure to carry something different everyday, if the mood strikes.
Good luck with it, for those of you taking up the quest!

This is very similar to my story as well. My carry was a CASE #62087.

If I could only carry one knife this is it. Carried last month every day.

I haven't carried only one knife since I carried my old Victorinox Spartan for 10 years until 1997.

I don't know if this counts, but although I carry more than one knife a day, the one knife that I've carried every single day and used a lot for the past 15 to 17 years, regardless of what else I'm carrying, is a black Victorinox Executive. It's still in great shape, though the black scales are ragged-looking. I consider it a traditional, since it's a 'lobster pen knife'. Sorry, I don't know how to post photos on the Internet.

Before coming back here, I carried a used Vic Pioneer that I'd gotten off auction. Every day for about 5 years straight. I finally just needed a change. The Pioneer is still as strong as the day I got it. Not sure how many years it was used before I got my hands on it.

Now you kids behave yeselves.
Or the One Knife Man'll get ya.
and he gets all yer knives ..
except one!

sent a chill down my spine:thumbup::D

One knife only??? Heck, I carry 5 or 6 with me most days and only 3 of those are everyday carries  I may have some issues but keeping plenty of knives in my pocket sure isn't one of them.... ;)

I just can't do it. I'm too much a knife floozy to try, and most days I had e at least two knives on me. My ever present SAK keyring classic and whatever my edc pocket knife of the day is. For the most part these days is the Camillus peanut. The best I could hope for is to limit myself to just those two for some sort of experiment.

My name is Carl, and I'm a knife addict!:(

My normal edc these days;

Well, I'm closer than some, but not close enough to the one knife. I currently have a dozen Traditional knives and 4 Vic SAK's; at one point, I had twice as many knives. I recently came to the realization that I'm done buying knives. I'm after another Vic Pioneer and once I get that one, I'm surely done.

Now, if a Blue Camel Bone Hawthorne comes knocking at my door, I may have to retract my statement :D

only one knife? that would be almost as bad as only having one fishing rod n reel, one bicycle, one hat ...

part if my "problem" with knives is the Rough Riders. They have so many different patterns and are priced so reasonably. They are like potato chips, you can't have just one.

How about a thread or contest just for fun to just carry the same traditional knife for the longest time and see how long we can make do with the same knife for many chores and show how the knife progresses as it ages, becomes pocket worn etc?

I'm like Gary. Been there. Done that. Only mine was a Buck 303 that I carried daily for over 10 years when I was in my 20's-30's. And for much the same reason. It did the job I needed done, and I didn't have extra money to spend. And like Gary, now I carry whatever strikes my fancy that day.

That's a tough haul, I did attempt it but failed miserably, well actually failed happily ;) got to carry a few more knives!

That's a good one to try with though, I just got a Case medium stockman myself and I like what it has, I did lower the sheepsfoot a little more to slim up the overall feel, other than that and some sharpening, it's quite a nice knife!

That link to John's thread on his 40 yr EDC is just outstanding. What a fascinating knife that is and the devotion of the owner who carried it. Very impressive and inspiring.

I've been carrying the sheepfoot 77 Barlow for many months now, all the others have sat in the safe. It just brings me the most joy day in and day out. It's never out of my reach 24/7.

The yellow Peanut for well over a year now, about 90% of the time since I got it.

The question for me is - " What would I do with the other two hundred ?":rolleyes:

Variety is the spice of life !

I think I will follow in Jeff's footsteps instead. ;)

I think it's a fine and sensible idea, one that i would really like to adopt and stick with. I tried a self imposed 90 day challenge last year and sadly could not stick to it. I think I made it about 60 days. Still tho the idea of trying again sounds good to me, the problem would be which one do I choose.
I will sleep on it then think it over a little. I carried a Case 3318 and a Buck 110 for 10 or 12 years and was happy as could be. Knives really do become familiar friends when carried and used that long. I wouldn't try only one and no others, but maybe a large locking folder and a pocketable slip joint like my old carry combo that served me so well.
Ah maybe, the idea always sounds good to me but sticking with it is tough these days as I really am a knife nut.

I could do it with my BUCK Ranger Skinner #113 fixed blade knife every single day ON and OFF of my small property here in town.

I would like to be able to take my ESTWING camp axe for the woods/wilderness or my SOG Fasthawk. I prefer the camp axe for the wilderness though.

I think of a 1 knife owner/user (Or even a 2 knife owner.) in the same manner as I do when it comes to a woman or man with one gun. She or he most likely knows how to use it proficiently on a regular basis!

I am NOT saying that a person who owns many knives or many firearms in various calibers, styles, etc. is not proficient using their toolS but the more you USE one tool the more you get used to handling it on a daily, weekly or monthly basis in my not so humble opinion.

Lots of people who can afford and have owned many TYPES of tools (From a to z!) in their lives scale down aka downsize at various stages of their lives. It had or has nothing to do with the money factor. Most of these people paid for their items IN FULL when they bought them and they never went into debt buying them.

Individual tastes change in some tools a wee bit or more. Physical issues may or may not be involved with the person at any age. Collections and/or things that get used on a regular basis may change for some people. Maybe they want to SHARE their STUFF with people who appreciate what they own or have used over time.

Many of them do this in their middle to senior years too.

It depends on the individual!

Not this lad, no, no, no!

Just way too many nice knives out there calling to me.

I have been carrying the same pocket knife every day for the last 18 years; it's now as comfortable as a broken in pair of shoes. Why would I change that?

Well I did it for about 25 years, then about 6 or 7 years ago I decided I would buy a last knife something nice to use and carry until my demise. Well that was a Gec 54 moose it was going so well until......, I was gifted a Case peanut from my newly born daughter, the peanut lead me to this place of guilt free enablers called Blade Forums now I have more knives and patterns than a sporting goods store, but have always carried and not at all waiver from carrying the peanut gifted to me by my daughter so I'm not a one knife man, that would just be crazy hanging around a place like this, but I have carried and used this Case peanut everyday for 3 years and just shy of 7 months, it's gutted fish, help with carpentry, fuzz sticks for a fire, whittle, prepare snacks for my daughter, meals for family, helped me fix and repair probably a hundred plus things, was my steak knife last night, so I'm not a one knife man, but I am a man that carries the same knife and carry other knives in rotation to complement it.
The blades have a natural patina, a reminder of its journey and the scales have a glass like candy appearance as the jigging has smoothed out over the years, blades are a little thinner from sharpening.

I'd love to carry just one knife for the rest of my life. Unfortunately I have yet to determine which one. :p
