Cult of the one knife man

2+ years for me. I've been carrying this Keith Johnson sodbuster exclusively. Keith made it for me back in June 2013. I especially like how the color of the old Westinghouse white micarta has developed.

I think the only way I could be a one knife guy is if I had one of those #15 electrician knives with a sheepsfoot and knifebrite acrylic. I was too late to get one regrettably :( but I have hopes of finding one. Currently I have only had a sak handyman and a case yellow stockman which I've been carrying for last few months because that's all I brought to college. Both are very useful to have around for fixing something a resident needs done. So long I have a sheepsfoot, pliers, and a screwdriver, I am ready for the world.

I could never jut be a one knife guy but I do tend to carry the same for a while before I change up.
Also most days I have 3 knives on my person.
My work knife for over a year now is a new version Vic Soldier, since Jan my other knife has been a Nifebright 15 Sheepsfoot w/pen blade.
This is a great knife, the Sheepsfoot blade has proven to be an excellent shape.
For years I have had either a Classic or Minichamp on my keys.

I think my setup is simple cause I go with the same thing for a little bit of time and it just takes some getting used to whenever I do change blades.
Anyway I salute all those knife knuts that can be comfy with one blade.

If I was to become a one knife man, then it would have to be an alox Electrician . . .
or my forest green Cadet . . .
or one of my 4" stockmen . . .
or maybe my Eureka jack . . .
or even one of my beautiful stag jacks . . .
Oh heck, I'm just not a one knife guy! :D

do these have different blade shapes? ive seen this same doctor that told me it was a gravity knife, using a tongue depressor to cut open an avocado and ive offered my knife but he said no this will do
Long, short, big, small, spear point, clip, warncliff. And usually a one hander.

THAT is the most beautiful Sodbuster I've ever seen. VERY NICE! I'd be proud to carry that one let me say!

So after about two weeks, I've ended up changing the one knife from the boys knife above, to the case mini trapper below. I just found the boys knife profile a little uncomfortable in pocket. This trapper with a wharncliff, instead of a spey, has taken its spot and is just perfect for my needs.

Ordered one of these this morning at 3.5 inch closed it should be great for edc pocket carry!

I'll have to second the comment about that being the most beautiful sodbuster I've seen.:thumb up:

The way the micarta has aged and mellowed, the graceful lines of the blade. Not quite as blunt as the Case and other factory sodbusters. I could see carrying that one exclusively for the rest of my life!

I've been carrying, not by any real intention, my damascus stag peanut for exactly three months now. There has been a day or two here or there when I've tossed another knife in my pocket, but I'd say 99% of the cutting time has gone to the peanut. Could be I've found "the one."

Hi,
I'm the op....so far I have carried this case stockman for right at 10 weeks. I may have cheated however because I have been carrying another blade with it so I don't think you can call me a real one knife man, and I have rotated the other blade between a Bucklite, a Buck 102 and even a modern one hand opening knife. I have been doing a lot of camping and hiking with my son and while I haven't ever came across a bear, there are a few around and your not allowed to carry a firearm around the campgrounds so I just wouldn't feel right carrying only a slipjoint.

That said, as much negative as I have read about Case's SS, I have really been surprised. I haven't used the spey blade at all. I have been keeping that one sharp for deer season to use as a backup skinner . I have used the sheepsfoot for opening stuff and the clip for cutting things out of the garden and both for cooking and chopping and dicing camp food. I haven't even had to sharpen the blades up yet. I find that a stockman knife makes a near perfect camp knife.

I agree with this. it depends on the situation. Everyday tasks and Im out and about, going to work or what not, one blade will do. atm i got my boker slimline in my pocket. But if i was to go camping or hiking I would want multiple blades, besides a slipjoint. preferably a fixed blade of decent size.

I have been carrying one SAK model for 10+ years now. I have replaced it once, a year or so ago as I left it at a job site. I keep spares because I use this particular knife so much. I like having the tweezers and tooth pick available which means I can't carry Alox SAKs. Started carrying a SAK around 1984-1985 and my model choice was a Tinker. Moved to an Alox Soldier around 1990 for a couple years and bumped to the larger 111mm size with the current model in the mid 90's as best I can remember which I purchased at a gunshow.

I sometimes carry another traditional but the model varies. Most often it's a GEC #42, but I have others in that size range. Been carrying the AG Russell Sowbelly Trapper that I got a week or so ago to try out one of his imports. I like it except I wish it had a stronger spring. The blades close rather easily closed and I don't know if it's typical of the model or not. But weak springs have been typical of much of the Chinese slippies I have handed. I should probably give them a call and ask.

Well I have to confess. I acquired a Buck Spitfire just to see if I'd like to carry a one hand opener along with my SAK. It was fun at first. Having a knife that opened and closed with one hand (It's a lock back, I depress the lock and start closing it by pushing it in on my leg) is cool. It also confirmed my belief that a pocket knife should have at least one blade and a combo bottle opener screwdriver. Sooner or later everyone tries to use that single blade to pry or as a screwdriver with often disastrous results.
Anyway after the new wore off it seemed silly to carry 2 knives, so I'm back to just my SAK and the Spitfire is on a shelf looking forlorn. I guess I'm naturally a one knife kind of guy.

Not to turn you away from a beloved knife but couldn't you also carry a Vic Classic for the tweezers and toothpick while carrying an Alox Vic as well? I love carrying my Vic Manager on my keys so I am never "knife-less". I don't need the toothpick but I do love having the tweezers.

I looked into that option, but don't like the smaller size of those tools. I bought a Classic and my wife took it. :) I purchased the Bantam with the intention of carrying it (for mostly the tools) and my GEC #42 (have two). Have a Spartan too that I made as part of manufacturers days at a knife store (and of course buying a SAK that day). Don't care much for the cork screw, but the knife was free.

Have a couple other traditionals the same size as the 42. I have just not implemented this new approach of carrying with the Bantam. If I did, I might even get some use our of my GECs. But I know that would be comfortable with this.

I was looking at GEC's web site and they really have not made a lot of 42's with two blades. The single blade seems to be the one they produce a lot.

does your "Vic manager" have two blades, Phillips w/can opener, file and orange peeler?
Had a SAK classic size with those and have searching high and low swearing it was named "manager". Lost a year ago when it fell out of my pocket when I pulled my key ring out.
Thank you in advance.

That sounds more like the Executive.

Well, I broke this streak on 7/20/15. This thread inspired me to leave all my other knives behind and just carry my 23. I found that I really missed my #92 and wished I had it with me. On 7/21 I left my 23 at home and have been carrying the 92 every day since. I have carried my Queen 03 on several occasions, but for the most part it's just the 92. It has done everything I've needed, and I haven't really missed my 23. When I get my double bladed 77 barlow in I'm expecting it to take the place of the 92 in my pocket. I really like the blade combination of the spear main with the coping secondary. Like jc57 reported, I've found that my desire to buy new knives has diminished significantly since I've been carrying just the one knife every day. I'll report back after I've gotten the 77 in my hands and can say whether it has taken up residence in my pocket or in my stash.
"Life" has prevented me from hanging out on The Porch as much as I wish I could, so I'm not really "in the know" about knifely developments in members' lives, but this post TOTALLY floored me, Cory!!:eek: I thought you were devoted to that #23 for life, and didn't even realize you had a Eureka jack. What is it about the 92 that kicked the 23 out of your pocket after so long? (I'm not as surprised to hear that you expect the Northfield Barlow to supplant the 92 when the Barlow arrives, since you once sent me a PM extolling the virtues of the 77 Barlow, at least in comparison to the TC Barlows.)

I think I could probably easily "get by" carrying just one knife (although I'm not sure which of my current knives I'd choose for that role), but it just wouldn't be as much fun for me, and I'm certainly enjoying buying my low-budget but new-and-different-to-me knives on a fairly regular basis. In fact, I think I'm going to order several knives tonight!:D

I could just carry a single 73 and be "richer" because of it.

Cory - Does the 92 tap your kids heads as well as the 23?:D

Do they miss it?

Im still going strong with my 73 but tomorrow i am flying from maine to atlanta and have to leave it home i will most likely buy a knife in atl. To carry for my vacation then mail it home then back to my 73
