Can I use my Sharpmaker on my new Cultellus cause it came from the factory with an edge like a butter knife.

Like a butter knife as in it is convexed and not a 'v' grind? Or as in 'dull as a butter knife'?

If that's the case, I'd send it back. Mine came with an extremely sharp convexed edge. They have been known to refund your shipping and also flog the inspector who let it through :)

You may as well start out with a nice factory convexed edge and then use the sandpaper and stropping techniques to keep it sharp....unless you are already good at sharpening and just don't want to part with it.

I guess in my question I am trying to figure out if it have a convex edge and if so can I just destroy that and give it the old V or should I learn the fine art of sharpening a convex edge.

You are not locked in either way, you can always change it back.
I am surprised to hear some are shipping dull.
My 4 were sharp as light sabers:confused::confused:

Mine came with a beautiful, sharp, almost mirror finished convex edge on it. +1 on sending it back the shop. A knife that expensive should not arrive dull.

Mine was/is convexed on one side, and V on the other. Oh, and it is not terribly sharp either.

I think I have decided to just run my new Cultellus over the sharpmaker so I can put it to work so it can earn her keep.

Mine arrived convexed and dull. SOme time on the edge pro and it is V grind and whittles hair. I wonder. Is there any advantage to a convex grins on a knife this small? I think not. In any case I would not return a knife to be sharpened. Though I wish it had arrived sharper I have no problem sharpening. In fact, that is a big part of the fun.

Do most Busses come shaving sharp or just sharp, sharp? Dull knifes should not leave the shop, right?

Mine would not shave at all. It's probably not proper to mention on this forum, but I expected more for the price. Nowhere close to a Dozier, May, Ingram, etc in terms of sharpness.

My experience with Busse sharpness has been hit or miss in this department, I'm sorry to say. Some have come razor sharp, like my Cultellus, both of my mistresses, my Scrofa and my Meaner. Others have been decidedly less so, like my CGASH-1, my BATACLE and my Bruiser Warden. Most Busse buyers probably sharpen/ reprofile their knives themselves anyway, but it would be nice if all Busses came out of the box screaming, scary sharp, like all the Golden Spydercos seem to. My Spyderco Mule? Made from 52100 steel, and is sharpest damn thing I've ever seen. It will cut your eyeball just from looking at it. I think it cost $35.

All 3 of mine are rediculously sharp. Cut the end of my thumb taking one out of it's sheath carelessly. Me = Stooooooopid

Cut a 1 1/2" steak tonight like it was BUTTER though!

I'm pretty surprised to learn of such inconsistency of knives leaving the factory. I know busse is infallible and all that, but for that money you should be able to expect perfection.

My cultellus was really sharp. The working hog cultellus was convexed but sorta on the dull side. I figure in the INFI scheme of things it was inexpensive and I like v grind better anyways. The odd trend I've noticed is that my CG knives are much sharper than the majority of the customs I have. Still nothing came sharper than my FBMLE. Go figure.

My cultelli was a bit dull from the shop but it is fixed now.

Whats odd is that the sharpest blade I got from Busse was a Game Warden SE
