I am curious as to how you guys like your NO's, and what you use them for.......

Who uses it as a self defense knife?

For self defense I'll go for BBA.
For hiking or camping the BNO and Basic #9 will be one good choice IMHO.

If you ever chase grouse into aspen thicker than the hair on a dog's back or rousted rabbits from dense brush or briars, then you'll see where a knife the size of the NO will shine. I don't have an NO but I've recently developed an appreciation for knives of that exact size. Currently I use the Fallkniven A1 and the Becker Companion. Just the right size for carrying into the field for a hard day's hunting. The NO and similar sized knives will keep the sticks out of your face and keep the briars off your trousers while not weighing you down too much in the field. The Fallkniven A1 and Becker Companion work well for this but the Natural Outlaw is now on my must have list because why settle for less than the best.

I get some pleasure from finding a relentlessly peaceful use for a combative looking knife.

I carry my NO as a survival / utility knife while flying. For me, it is an excellent compromise between size and performance.

It is large enough (and tough enough) to handle just about any task, but still small enough for most tasks and convenient to carry all the time.

After all, the best survival knife is the one you have with you when you need it.

I have used my Natural Outlaw to separate the pelvis on a deer and quickly chop off a couple of legs to get me out of the freezing rain.

I carry mine with me in my truck and whenever I travel. I like the size and toughness of this knife. I tied a pigtail lanyard on it.

I keep mine in my Survival bag that rides in my truck with me. It's an overall perfect size for any job. I firmly believe that all a man needs to take over the world is a Battle Mistress, a Natural Outlaw, and a Mean Street. Those three knives cover every job a man needs to take care of. Well any job that calls for a knife.

Thanks guys. I'm looking into a SOB type "holster" for mine.....</font>

Talk to Andy Prisco, he has some made by Kenny Rowe. I know kenny and his leather work is superb.

Used the Natural Outlaw last weekend to hack most of the way through a gnarled old tree root (about 2-1/2" or so thick). The NO is not very optimum for chopping, as is the case with all knives I have tried of that length. I had to choke way back on the handle to get much energy into the target. Despite the loss of control, using it with only two fingers and the thumb holding the end of the handle achieved almost passable momentum for chopping. It's not comfortable though. FWIW, the edges of the cut area were shaved extremely clean, not torn at all.

After we had pretty much chewed all the way through that tree root with the NO (and a couple of licks from a BM), the NO would still cut paper EASILY and semi-shaved. I never cease to be impressed with Busse edge holding ability.

While I think the Steel Heart is more of the ideal size for an all-around blade, the NO impressed me as a very fine carry knife. As a tactical field knife or hunter/camp blade I think it would work very well. For tactical fighters, my tastes tend toward a Randall #1 or maybe a Mad Dog, although I think Busse's INFI blades are tougher than either.

My quick $.02 worth. Stay sharp,
Greg
