Curious how you clean your deer knife prior to resheathing?

oh come on; a plastic baggie? i'm with the consensus here...rag, pant leg, grass, whatever; i'll clean it off best as i can then sheath it, in my LEATHER sheath...when i get back to camp is when it will get hosed off properly...leave the safe queens in the safe...

I was starting to think I was the only one that cleaned it as well as possible in the field with whatever natural materials were at hand. Then clean it properly at home. I guess we are the knife abusers.

I think what the op is talking about is cold weather or if there is no water around. Of course if it is not below freezeing and your standing by a stream there really in not much of an issue

Next point I use high end knives guns etc and I will be damed if I have a choice I'm not gonna shove an expensive knife into an expensive custom leather sheath when the bLade is heavily contaminate. If its a prouduction knife I am not as concerned m

...as do I, and of course i'm not gonna holster a gunky blade; you can get most all of the contaminate off, even without running water...but i'm not anal about gear either, once out it the field an expensive knife and sheath is gonna do its job; the blade is gonna be dropped and nicked; the sheath is gonna get scraped and mottled and stained...cheap knife, expensive knife no difference; in the field all treated the same.

I carry Simple Green wipes in a small ziplock. They are excellent for cleaning the fat or any dried gunk off of hunting knives. They are also non-toxic, non-abrasive, and biodegradeable.

I can usually jam mine in the dirt a few times to remove the big stuff if no leaves are around then like mentioned earlier wipe it on a pant leg. Hell even for that matter most of the big stuff can be pushed off with a thumb or finger and still just wiped on something.

Just to clarify I am not jamming into rocky ground but rather just some loose top soil. I find that the stuff that remains is now covered in dirt and flicks off easier.

I wipe it off with a paper towel then use a simple cardboard temporary sheath till I get home.

you guys amuse me with your manly talk of what you do and only a sissy cleans his blade with a wet nap . I believe the op was talking about freezeing conditions and no water . If i had a piece of **** knife i would not care either but I dont use **** .. Hey wet naps have other uses ya never used a wet nap to wipe your ass in the woods or you guys to manly ya just use your hand.

Or are ya parked 50 yds away and are home in ten minutes .

this is why i dont frequent hunting forums because theres alot of super rambo hunters that just make me laugh

I ve hunted all over from Africa to Asia The yukon to BC and all over out west and guess what I always have some wet naps and an alchol swab guess Im a pussy

Tajikistan 16,000 ft no water and 8 degrees kinda hard to stick my knife in the ground and wipe it on my pants plus the knife I had was a thousnd dollar blade so sticking it in the rocks was not an option

Hahahah a $1k blade to skin game...that's awesome.

Wait wait, I know I know, it makes the meat taste 'richer'.

I carry some folded-up paper towels in my field dressing kit. I f I don't use them all cleaning my hands, I wipe the fat and blood off of the blade with them. When I get back to the truck I clean it off with water or just sheath it and clean it off when I get back to the house.

Wow - that's a fantastic trophy regardless of what knife you used to field dress it. Agree btw - wipes of some kind are an easy solution in the field.

Those micro-fiber towels are pretty good. They do a nice job of cleaning, they can absorb a lot of liquid, and they wash out pretty easily. This thread has given me pause to think about sticking one in my hunting kit.

Cleaned a doe with my Becker BK-11 Friday. I wiped it off as well as possible with my hands, then wet down my bandanna and scrubbed the blade and handle a bit. There was still a bit of goop on there (especially on the handle) but it was good enough. Washed it with soap and water when I got home and used it to cut my turkey later that night.

Works for me.

I used my Oso Sweet to skin and process my buck this year, had my BK-14 ready in my pack, but I just went to town quickly with my folder........I wiped the blade off on the hide, and stuck it in my pocket til I got back later that night....disassembled it for a good cleaning.
