Hmmm... interesting. I presume that's a found object. The line in the edge bevel is interesting, too.

The line is where the iron cheeks meet the hard steel core.

The knife is probably a specialty blade for agriculture/gardening, as the handle angle indicates open use. It looks like it is made to cut stems/roots/tops off plants. A beet knife is similar.

If you can find someone to interpret the kanji on the blade you might be able to get more information. There are a couple on the sword sub forum or perhaps Bernard Levine's sub forum.

I thought it might be San Mai, but didn't want to venture the guess without someone more knowledgeable checking in. ;)

Interesting
customer found in a box he got from flee market

Edge had 3/16" chunks out of it.

He says it could be a century old NATA? No clue on this stuff.
All I know is this sucker is definitely forged and old.
Thanks for the insight guys!

Yes, that was my impression of the handle angle. This shorter version could have been for a specific task....or shortened when broken. Most nata I have seen photos of were longer.

Hello.

We say it "AZUMAGATA NATA" in Japanese.
The kanji is written "YASUKI-HABANE"(安来鋼).
It is a kind of steel materials.

And the nata is made from the forge technique called warikomi instead of san-mai.

*"YASUKI-HABANE"(安来鋼).* is this a name ?

Can you explain
"warikomi" and how it differs from San Mai?

Thank you for this information.

Any ideas how old this is?

I'm just going to guess, but san mai is a sandwich design, where as warikomi is simply forge welding a high carbon steel edge onto wrought iron or mild steel blade body. No sandwich, just one welded to the other.

"YASUKI-HABANE"(安来鋼) is material's name.
It isn't maker's signature.
This Nata's name is AZUMA NATA (another name: Kanto nata).

san-mai and warikomi are different forge techniques.

割り鋼(割り込み): warikomi
三枚合わせ: san-mai

hardness:
硬: hard
中硬: middle hard
軟: mild
