Mark Farley at BurlSource has proven himself, again and again, to be one of my very favorite suppliers. I had a customer that wanted something different, so while we were on the phone, I directed him towards BurlSource. He picked out a block of CURLY MAHOGANY. I've done a fair bit of furniture work, and I had never seen Mahogany that was curly... let alone crazy insane curly.

This piece was stabilized by K&G, and took some fanangling on my part to get it where I liked the finish... but once I got it there, I was elated. This wood has something I have never seen before... one of those intangible, elements you can't really put your finger on... but it equals COOL FACTOR. ;) :) I have to be brutally honest and say I probably wouldn't use it again for a knife like this one, as it's really hard to get the wood and stainless guard to blend together like I normally do things... but I will definitely use this stuff again... It's freaking awesome.

Oh, and it's stuck on some W2. ;)

This is NOT the blade from my sanding/etching videos... just a similar one. :)

Okay okay! You can be an honorary Oregon Knifemaker now....
Seriously. That handle is awesome!
Hip hip hooray for Mark! One of my favorite suppliers too!!

pretty. that wood has way more going on that it seems the first time you look at it. that is pretty amazing.

Wow...just wow. When you look at a couple of those pictures, the curl is so pronounced that it makes the handle appear to be textured, then you look down and see how nice and smooth it is.

Crazy...and ultra cool!

Thanks guys :)

Mark has more than done me right over the last couple years. I know he's had some sales where he listed free shipping if you agreed to post a photo of the wood you purchased, on a completed knife. I think I owe Mark about twenty photos. :foot:

I almost didn't want to post this, just because I didn't want to create a waiting line for curly Mahogany! ;) :)

Haha. I hope I am first in line!

That piece of wood with a ladder damascus.. drool. It's a beautiful knife though, and an amazing piece of wood. Every time I go to burl source I lose a lot of money.. lol.. very very nice work!

Thank you guys... but I'm just another hack trying to muddle through this stuff and pay the mortgage! But I wouldn't want to be paying it with any other job. :D

Thanks Matt... that means a lot coming from you bud! :)

That's a nice hunk of wood

and you used it well.

I notice that the curl is really tight and consistent, but you put it on so that the curl spacing gets larger towards the butt.

That works so well & would be totally out of whack if it was reversed.

Definitely a crazy curly piece of wood. Is it quilted as well? i.e. Does changing the angle the light hits it, change which bits shine? One of those things like chatoyance that a photo never captures.

OOOOOOHHHHHHH my. SBC makes any knife look its best, and he has done very good work on an absolute work of art.

Sam quit it you are sending shivers up my back. No damit I meant the knife is!:D

Wow if you can hear it I am doing wolf whistle at that one. Man that is one sweeeeeeeeeeeeeet knife!:thumbup:
