Curly something?...another wood ID post

Hello,

Burl Source's recent post reminded me of a mystery wood that I have...I got a couple of pieces of this stuff in a box-o-wood assortment I bought a couple of years ago, and sent it to K&G to be stabilized. It seemed to match up with 'curly red oak' from the list that was included, but it doesn't look much like other examples of red oak I've seen. Does anyone recoginize it as being red oak or something else?

Looks like oak to me. A very nice piece at that.
If you could post a photo of the grain on the sides and end it would help for a more educated guess.

OK, thanks Mark! I will try, but the rest of the surfaces are still pretty rough so I'm not sure the photos will turn out or show you what you need to see...

Oak is not something I would think of as an interesting choice in general, but I think these pieces are pretty neat.

+1 for oak. That second picture makes me 97 3/8% positive. I might also add that it's some of the coolest oak I've ever seen.

I think its Red Oak. Color is very Koa though. Looks like its been stabalized so it could have been dyed.

Beautiful wood, you'll have fun with that!
I posted on some very pretty curly wood that turned out to be oak, about eight months ago...had to take it to a hardwood specialist, an importer. Oak can have some spectacular grain.

Thanks for the input, guys. It sounds like it might be red oak after all. I showed it at least one wood worker who did not feel it looked like red oak, but I guess that doens't mean much.

I did have it stabilized by K&G, but not dyed. I'm anxious to see what it will look like on a knife.

Sand it a little...Oak has a recognizable scent.

Be sure and post a photo!

It looks like curly red Oak to me too, Paul. I'm with Russ, a quick pass against the grinder would probably let you know. I never thought I would use Oak on a knife, but I bought some spalted blocks from Chuck at AKS that were awesome. When shaping, they still smell like the same 'ol plain red or white oak you used in the high school wood shop. :)

Thanks for the input! High school shop class was a looong time ago now; I'm not sure I recall what oak would smell like ;)

Beautiful piece, Nick.

Oak always smelled unpleasant to me, kind of like piss. I've made a fair amount of drawknife and hammer handles from it. Never used it on a knife other than some of that ancient black bog oak from Mark.

I agree with the scent comments. Oak and Koa have distinct smells when sanded. I think I have a very keen sense of smell and can usually distinguish most woods that I have used before. Among the best smelling to me are Lignum, Camphor, and Cocobolo. Ironwood on the other hand smells like a$$. Looks like dyed oak to me.
