Curmudgeon before my time?

I have always wanted to be a curmudgeon, I have no interest in not collecting knives.:D I have been a collector of everything for most of my life, I collected canes, this one I kept to poke people with once I finally become a curmudgeon :D My Daughter tells me it has already happened.;)

Bes regards

Robin

One of the reasons I collect traditionals is because there are lots of gems out there that were lovingly used and are well over 50 years old. I find old Case, Camillus, Queens, Schrades and a host of other names most don't recognize our have ever heard of, Union Knifeworks, Kent, LF&C and Robeson are some older names that most don't recognize. Living in NEPA I'm lucky enough to live near many of the old cutlery factories that blossomed and eventually died in the tri-state area.

These older knives are usually 75%-100% of their original condition and I've never paid more than $20 for any of them. Knives comparable to the GECs and Queens of today at 1/5 of the cost. I also try to give them all a little pocket time, it's possible. :)

One of the things that does get me though is how companies like Rough Rider is trying to keep all the old patterns alive, even Schrade/Taylor brand has re-released so many of the old patterns Schrade discontinued prior to closing its doors and liquidating their assets. I see patterns like the 51OR that when I bought it new in the 80s cost me upwards of $40 now the discontinued model is seeking for $15, a Schrade Deer Slayer for $20.

Maybe their quality will improve with time and they'll at least be able to match the same quality of RR's knives..

Like many here I've given/gifted away many knives in the last 15 years asking with being the recipient of quite a few gifted knives and won giveaways and with all that my collection of knives hasn't changed in number, just brands. :)

I think my Sig line sums up my feelings pretty well right now. If my collection of knives I bought were the only ones I had my collection would be much smaller. Alas a sizeable portion of my collection are gifts from well meaning family and friends. :)

We collect about the same knives with the same philosophy.

Here's some used Camillus in excellent condition I bought very inexpensively. Good knives. Great value.

Any knife content in any of this? I don't get the whole thread. Why would any one come to a Knife Collector's Forum and start a thread about "one knife is all you really need"? I come to talk about knives. Not "feelings" or morals or whatever the heck y'all tryin to talk about. I have no Moral Dilemma! I like knives! I buy knives! And I post knife content.

How's that for a Moral Dilemma?

Maybe it's about being content with what we have.... or maybe finding that one perfect knife that makes all others not needed... There are a few here that have purposely reduced their collection because they had more than they needed. It doesn't keep them from coming here and enjoying the pictures and knife talk. My love of the slipjoint isn't driven by trying to own them all. I've easily sold or gifted the majority of knives I have owned. I try to only keep the ones I really like.

The definition of the word" collection" implies more than one. There is no such thing as "one perfect knife that makes all others unnecessary". Even Stone Age men had more than one knife. I don't really care how many knives a person does have or doesn't have. I just don't understand coming to Collector's Forum and moralizing that "one knife is all you really need".

That's part of the problem I have, I like them all :) , there aren't to many I've found that I can't find something I like and this comes as a result of not impulse buying, I buy what I like so my collection is primarily made up of all knives I like. Even the cheap gifted knives I have, (my Franklin Mint Gas Pump knives I like because my wife had one sent to me secretly every other month for the entire series.

I have a friend who collects beer cans, (alright I have many friends who collect, (accumulate) beer cans ;) ) he has around 2,000 cans, he's certainly an enthusiast collector but what can you use the beer cans for other than look at? He asked sites his collection/hobby is no different than mine so I ask him to pull some bands from his pocket and show me how to use a beer can? I pulled my SAK Farmer out of my pocket and opened two bottles of Black and Tan from his refrigerator and said, "...see,I can use the things I collect, lets pop open one of those Billy Beers you have and see what it tastes like... no response. :)

A man can easily own and use but one pocket knife at any given time in his life with other type knives in the kitchen, tool box, etc and still appreciate knives or even speak about them. My father and grandfathers lived perfectly fine that way.

To me it's not really what knives or how many knives someone owns. It's what they can do with them that really counts.

Most of the old folks whose knives we collect would say " Why the hay would you need so many knives." :D

Robin

There's nothing wrong with the one knife theory, my one buddy who is an Electronics Tech and an excellent auto mechanic has one knife he carries, even though over the years I've given him many he carries an SAK Classic on his keys and in 20 years it's all the pocket knife he's ever needed. Than there are those who never had our carried a pocket knife and the Sony get why I would carry one, let alone 5 or 6 on me at one time.

To each their own, I don't judge. We all come here for different reasons, some of them coincidentally are knife related. ;)

I collect knives because I like them....always have. I can afford to buy what I want now that my two sons have graduated from college. This whole thread was started because a young man cannot afford to buy all the knives he would like to. At his age I could not afford to either because of priorities.....raising a family.
Patience is priceless.

rma, sorry if my adding the word "moral" upset you. Your perspective is your own. As posted, the word "moral" was meant to imply a meaning of "should I spend money on or lust after an object that will not help me become the man or person I desire to be." Basically, does my "collecting" hurt others.

You answered from your perspective. All I ask in any threads like this is try to see the post from the op's perspective. Again, sorry if my post took it deeper in the philosophy of collecting and not towards the knife content of collecting. No hard feelings here.

I never said I was upset. I never judged anybody. I'm not upset now. I thought this is a Knife Collector Forum. My only problem was one of attempting to understand why a person would go to a Collectors Forum and post "One Knife is all you really need". If that makes him feel better, that's fine! I can see just fine thanks.

I'd argue that guy who carries the same pocket knife for thirty years and feels content with it has found the perfect one.... I seem to remember jackknife's old man carried a peanut for a long time.

I have a collection, but I keep it paired down.

I think it is more of a knife enthusiasts forum.

Actually it was my way of putting into perspective my desires for things I lust after but cannot afford. Trying to assure myself that I have what I need and more so I don't get to jealous of the new pretty knives I missing out on (ESPECIALLY the 2014 forum knife...so jealous)
