Current Camp Tramp Equivalent?

I had a Cold Steel Recon Scout for a few years and really liked it. Then when I gave that to my son to take to Iraq with him for his first tour I realized that I missed it so I picked up a Camp Tramp.

Later down the road from that I loaned my Camp Tramp to a friend that really loved it and begged me to have it so in a bleeding heart moment I let that go as well, and with great regret later I might add.

I had wanted another similar but decided maybe a longer blade wouldn't be too bad so when the Dog Father came out by Scrap Yard I was one of the fist on board to order one. I love that thing. Its a super camp and yard tool and one heck of a chopper. You might look for one of those if you don't mind the extra 2.5" of blade.

Get a khukuri. :D

If you like the rubbery handle, something from Scrapyard is likely the quickest fix. If you're more of a steel junky, something from Swamp Rat with a micarta handle will fit the bill. Otherwise, you can watch and wait. I recently picked up a Howling Rat for about $135 from the exchange - which isn't much above list when you consider shipping and the sheath were included. Deals do turn up, you just have to wait for them to find you.

If you really can't wait and need to stick to a budget, I hear that people outside of Wauseon make knives. ;) Something from Bill Siegle, Ranger Knives, Ontario (RAT series), Bark River, Fallkniven, or even Cold Steel might fit the bill. That may be blasphemy here in the swamp, but handling a diverse range of blades lets you appreciate the workmanship and functionality that Swamp Rat puts out.

Good luck.
