Why do some names have a little + sign next to them?

I think I heard something about the people with the "+" next to them being on your friends list, but I might be mistaken.

OK, here's a serious question: I accepted 5 "Friend" requests, and I can see a + after one that was on the Forum...

Do I need to send them requests asking to accept me as a "Friend" too now??? Or is it sort of automatic??? If they look in their UserCP, will I show up???
