I'm finally treating my first stainless blades in my "homemade" oven. Did a few carbon blades and turned out good but my question is. I preheated to 1450* and soaked the blades for 10 minutes. Then for the ramp up to 1950 I am suppose to soak for a 1/2 an hour. It will probably take my oven 1/2 hour to 45 minutes to ramp from 1450* to 1950*. Is that a problem? Or is that normal, and once it hits 1950* start the 30 minute soak?

Shouldn't be a problem. I recently inquired about ramping up to 1750°F for A2, and how many specs say to do so at 400°F per hour, as opposed to putting a blade in once at temp. A reply from Mr Cashen, on a previous thread, "What Robert has pointed out deals with histeresis in the iron carbon solution system. The faster you heat the higher will be the effective critical temperatures since you will outpace equilibrium, slow heating will allow solution to occur more readily."

The 1/2-3/4 hours it will take your oven I think will be fine. And yes, once it hits 1950°F, hit the timer!

If the mods don't mind a link to hypefree.....http://www.hypefreeblades.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=358

Thanks a lot. I got the 3 blades out and plate quenched. They're still a little warm. Do I wait til they are room temp before I cryo?

Sorry for the delayed response! Yeah, I would wait until they were room temp, able to hold in hand easily at least, and then into the cryo. Any delay may cause RA to stabilize a bit, not ideal.

Start your time when the oven reaches 1950. Take out 1 at a time and plate quench for 60 seconds. I can grab mine bare handed at this point. After I plate quench all of them I cut the packs open and go to the dry ice bath for 1 hour or til all the dry ice has evaporated.

"......Do I wait til they are room temp before I cryo? ...."

Just a reminder - you are using dry ice and alcohol bath ( approx. -100°F). You are not doing cryo. you are doing a sub-zero treatment. It will do what you want, but cryo is a different thing and done at much lower temperature (-300°F or lower).

Yea, I understand that. Its just easier to say I guess.
