I have a Curtiss F3 3.5 with a brown g 10 scale at Dave's shop now for some warranty repairs. I called Dave this morning to ask if he

had a ti scale that was returned because it had a flaw that he could up on my knife instead of the g 10 scale. He said he didn't have a scale that

was returned. He did say that he had a new ti scale his parts drawer that he could swap for the g 10 scale for no charge.

I asked him twice if I could pay him pay him for the ti scale. He said no charge both times.

AWESOME above and beyond Service from Dave Curtiss!!!:thumbup::thumbup:

Wait and see if the knife works properly.

Ain't that the truth...I've had problems with 2 brand new Curtiss Knives out of 2 purchased, and one of them had even more problems than it started with, when I got it back. IMHO, for the money being charged for those knives, the attention to detail and quality control just isn't there.

The point of a custom knife, at least for me, is to know that the maker built the knife by hand, and he made sure everything was right. Needless to say, that's not what I've gotten with the two I've bought.

Curtiss apparently doesn't see the value in centered blades, solid lockup, neatly sharpened edges, or returning customer emails. For $700-800, I expect more.

Nothing personal against Mr. Curtiss. He's a nice guy, but IMO, there are much better knives out there for less money (Ferrum Forge, etc.).

I have had absolutely no issues with my F3. The knife is perfectly centered, the fit and finish is outstanding, it flips like a dream and it's sharp as hell. However, the lockup is a bit later than I would like though it's holding steady at about 75% (which may be perfectly normal for a Curtiss as far as I know).

This is not my experience at all. Sorry yours was so much worse.

I sent my F3 in to have a choil added and had a experience dealing with Dave. He answered my initial email quickly and after that we gave text back and forth a few times. He is GTG in my book.

Lockup at 75% sounds good compared to my F3 that would hang at about 20% and then pop loose when you grab the knife at a different angle. I was actually naive enough to believe that was normal and that it would break in. Ended up just selling it at a loss.

The new Slimline I just bought had to go back for regrind because the edge was slamming into the standoff whenever it was closed. When I got it back, the new edge extended onto the edge of the finger choil (not neatly, either...sloppy and mangled looking), and the blade was so off-center it was nearly touching the liner (and pivot could not be tightened).

After owning a few of those, paying $800-900 for a new (and oh-so-perfect) Shirogorov seems like a bargain. :D

That doesn't sound good at all. I am sorry for your bad luck. I have been surprised by custom makers a few times and it does tend to piss you off when a big name guy does a half ass job on your knife.

Hate to revive old threads but I've got a knife at his place right now and its been there forever. How long did it to you, or any of you for that matter, to receive the knife back? I don't want to slander a good name but its been so long that it's kind of outa hand.

Just curious, when did you send your knife in? Mine has been there a bit over 2 weeks and i still haven't heard anything yet and he estimated turnaround in a week.

Got it yesterday 11/13. Took 2 extra weeks in the mail as he didn't put my apt number three first time around so it came back to him. Per my request, he fixed the sticky lock and sharpened the knife. Not quite sure if he did open the pivot and clean the IKBS as the pivot screws are clocked exactly like before sent it in
He's quick to respond to text message. Text his number on the website
Edit : i should add that his communication was very prompt and he didn't charge me a dime. The delay in my case was understandable for a one man operation, looks like he has been rather busy these days
