Custom 110 - To use or not

This may be a dumb question, but I'm asking anyway.

I was given a custom 110 at Christmas last year from my mom. S30V, blue handles with the finger grooves, all silver, no brass. Name on blade and initials on the back.

I absolutely love the look and feel of this knife. It's just beautiful. I have never carried it, though. My thinking has been to keep the knife in perfect condition. I take it out and admire it a lot, but still have never actually used it for fear of scratching it up.

It seems a shame not to use this knife. I'm starting to think of using it and whatever happens to it happens. It will just add some character to the knife. Heck, I could cross the street tomorrow and get hit by a car and would never have had the chance to use it and enjoy it.
What do you guys think? To use it or keep it in the drawer only to be looked at and admired?

Use it on special occasions, I have EDC 301's and such that see a lot if use. But I carry customs on special occasions for light use, it does add some character!

Do what ever brings you the most pleasure. If you decide to use it I doubt anything will happen to it that a quick trip back to Buck for a "spa treatment" wouldn't correct.

I would say it's up to you. Don't listen to us. Everybody thinks different. I have lots of knives I'll never use. But I bought them for that purpose not to use them just to collect them. I have some that are my EDC knives. I have knives that I got for Christmas from the custom shop. Ramhorn 110s and a couple other ones. I'll never use them not because I don't want to. I have so many other knives I can use instead. Maybe someday I will use one of them. I do have some nice knives I use and a yellow horse knife I carry if I need to use it I will use it. So it's all up to you if you want to use your knife use it if you don't don't. We get asked this question 25-50 times a year seems like. I would hate to tell you not to and then you'll never know what it's like to use. Then I'd hate to tell you to use it and you wreck it and then be pissed off at me for telling you to use it. That's why I say it's up to you not us. But if you do use it let us know how you like it.

:)

if you are planning on passing it down to kids or grandkids years later or whatnot down the line? things dad or grandpa used always meant far more to me than things they had but i had no experiences or knowledge of them using.

the things i inherited from my grandfathers and great grandfathers that mean something to me are things they used and carried daily and i grew up seeing the items. for me it means more than somrthing found they never used in their sock drawer. one has memories attached the other none.

consider that, but then again i see folks kids just sell everything their relatives leave them, without any care and just want the money.

so use if ya want, dont use if ya want. neither is wrong.

You wouldn't be wrong either way. I'd use it since that's probably why she got it for you. It might make her proud to know that you're using a tool she picked out, since it sounds like she put a lot of thought into it. If anything happens to it, Buck will take good care of it for you. You could always save up and get another one just like it and that could be your user....

I'm with JD 100% on this one. If you somehow manage to foul it up, Buck will take care of it.

I'll add that if you use it and she gets that warm fuzzy feeling that she did good; there could me more in the future!

Do you have other knives that are for display only, or are all of your knives users? That display/user situation may have influenced your mom in selecting the gift. Sometimes a straightforward approach works best. Ask her what she had in mind. Maybe say something to the effect that it's such a nice knife and such a great gift, you are almost afraid to use it. See what she says.

I use my one and only custom shop 110. Using it is what brings me the most happiness. If keeping it in pristine condition makes you happy do that. If not, take it out, get it dirty, and knock the New off of it.

I have some limited edition 110's that probably cost the same as a custom 110 that I use. I like them and I like carrying them and using them.
I have a number of other Buck models I don't use that I keep in my collection of historical knives. Use it when your Mother is around. So, she
sees you enjoying her gift to you. DM

DR, a loaded question. I fully intend to use every knife I buy. Reality set in a long time ago. Unless I use a different knife everyday for a long, long time it won't happen. What makes you happy, looking, or using? If you don't have too many, I say use...especially a S30V.

Thanks for all the great comments, guys. I didn't even realize Buck had a spa treatment. Knowing that makes me want to use it now. I'll ask my mom her option on the matter and I think she will probably say to use it, as well.

I appreciate the time you all have taken with your responses and will let you know the answer to which way I go with the knife. I saw that someone asked for pictures, so I will take a couple of the knife when I have time here in the next day or two. Thanks again for your insight.

Another thought DR, if you do use it frequently, it will be a constant reminder of your Mom as opposed to storing it and occasionally looking at it. Just another thought.
