Custom 110: with or without rivets?

I am thinking about ordering a custom shop 110, or buying one off the pages here and I wondered what people with more knowledge than me think about getting the rivets, which is an option? I notice a lot of the fancy handle materials are without rivets.

I'm thinking the buffalo horn. How does it hold up?

(My only other Buck is a Strider model.)

I like rivets or pins on mine... I don't know how good they hold up with out the rivets... But I'm sure they hold up just find...
Good luck on your new custom... pins or no pins...:thumbup::thumbup:

I started out not liking rivets and buying a few that way, but then acquired a few with rivets and now I'm a rivet guy. :)

I would say it's completely a personal preference and you can't go wrong no matter which you end up with.:thumbup:

While I've seen and like some with both I tend to go with pins on the wood type materials and without for the horn/stag materials. It's just my perference but one a really nice piece of stag or horn I just don't care the the way the pins look, usually.

Just ordered my first custom shop 110 with pins, and NS bolsters...

I've gotta agree with badhammer on this one. Rivets aren't too grand (to my eye anyways) on bone and stag, but right at home on wood.

What did you pick for the scales? I also favor the NS bolsters over the brass. Mostly because you tend to see so many brass 110's compared to NS.

I went with the Koa Flame Wood, and NS bolsters with pins. The NS is allot less common so in trying to be different I chose them. The 112 I got for Christmas 18 years ago has NS bolsters, and that knife started all this madness. We'll see what happens with this one.

My opinion is bone/stag/horn is more likely to crack over time with pins. They do look nice though. Also, adhesives these days are amazing.

Excellent. The Koa is probably my next order option. IIRC more than a few members here have posted some beautiful Koa on their 110's in previous threads.

The potential for cracking was also a consideration for my choice to go without pins.

Well i'm not big on bone or stag so the wood options are nicer in my opinion. I wish they would have other wood choices cause I hate oak and walnut, the orange wood was an option but I wanted something that looked a bit more fancy.

I think the rivets add some old timey flare and should also be more secure, even though adhesives seem to hold just fine, I just don't trust glue.
I have the CS 110 with royal indigo wood + rivets, NS bolsters, and s30v blade.
I love it, but the NS tarnishes pretty fast.
Make sure you upgrade to the leather sheath as well. Great quality.

I got the S30V as well, although I really don't think it is overly superior to the Buck 420Hc, but thats a different thread and has been talked about in excess. I did up grade the sheath to the tan leather. The nylon sheaths are crap and don't belong on a 110 especially a custom shop knife...

I went with the rivets on mine. I have been using this knife for nearly 3 years now coming this December. Held up great:

Pins -VS- no pins (less filling - tastes great)???????

I always find it funny when asked my (our) opinion on a subjective topic like this one. In the end the decision must be made by the fellow who will pull the trigger in the end and choose what they like best, as it is not my decision to make. However, I'd be honored to help you spend your money on a custom built for you Buck 110!

As they say decisions...decisions;). Now will it be a brass or NK frame?, FG or no FG?, Pins or no pins?, and what handle material? Wow, almost enough decisions to make your head spin:). All of these questions are subjective and each person must make those choices on their own based on what they like. For me those choices changed based on the handle material I have chosen. Now I have only had a few CS knives made for myself, and I have bought a few CS knives some other folks did not want any more. So I'll post some photo's with some of my thoughts.

First photo...pins -vs- no pins? Well I bought this CS knife from one of the fellows here and he just happened to have the same name as me:thumbup:. The 110 is a CS knife, I'm not a fan of the deep set pins, I see them every now and then and Buck does not have a box to check for this option?????? What do you think? Deep set pins:barf: The 112 in this photo is not a CS knife (the 112's in the following photo's are CS knives!)

Ok, on Rams Horn I like brass better than NK, I think the colors go better. Pins -VS- no pins, I picked FG NK for the 112 as it is less common???? You choose and let us know what you like best (both of these are CS knives).

Ok, on these next few photo's the same thoughts as above apply. For KOA, I like brass as it colors go well together. For Buff Horn, I like NK as it goes better with the black color......IMHO.....this is all subjective stuff (I bought the Buff CS as a gift, if it were for me I would have got it smooth and not jigged).

Like I said earlier, I'm not a fan of bone, or stag, but that 112 with Ram horn and nickle silver bolsters is a real nice looking knife...
