Custom 110: with or without rivets?

Thanks for everyone who posted on this thread, especially people who took time to put up pictures. In the end I went for the water buffalo scales, nickle silver bolsters, and pins. Black leather sheath. My first custom shop knife, only my 2nd Buck (and the first hasn't arrived yet - a Frontiersman).

I have enjoyed this board a great deal.

dr0,

Post some photo's when you have your knives in hand!

Sounds good! I think each blade depending on what material is used may or may not look good with rivets. Variety is the spice of life. Have a few with; have a few without.

Can anyone recommend a good custom shop for a 110? Some beautiful knives here and I'd like to get my pops one for Christmas.

Stay away from Buck's 'Custom Shop'... it's too addictive!! Be happy with a basic 110 from WallyWoild.

I started with this one some years back - 'lucked out' on the teardrop Damascus being available. No mere photo does the 'Flaming Koa' scales justice... nickel silver bolsters, too.

My last custom 110 from those 'pusher' folks was another 'user', ha ha, from a year or so back:

S30V/NS/blue Dymondwood - $86 shipped with a nylon sheath. A 'user', indeed! Too pretty - like the similar one I bought a few years back in BG-42/NS/orange Fiji wood - $84 then - too pretty to beat up!

Most of my custom 110s have rivets, the jigged/fg-ed water buffalo being a notable exception. Adhesives work pretty well these days, making rivets more for 'dress-up'.

Stainz

Buck itself recommeds no rivits on bone. They say they have to sand your nice bone by the rivits when installing the rivits and drilling. You could end up with some white spots by pins in your nice dark bone. Also in custom shop the pins do not hold the bone to knive.. just for looks. They use glue on bone. Actually it is not sanding but from when they polish the rivits the bark can be discolored so Buck recommends no rivits on bone.

Bummer, as I was thinking of reviving the Bucks & Beer thread, i'd post in the Bucks & Bourbon thread instead but I drink cheap whiskey and i'm afraid they'd laugh at me.
Go for it.
I'd probably follow ya.

I've necro posted myself.
I just don't do it everytime I post.

It's just common that new members sign up and don't read the rules.
Sometimes those old threads are great threads tho.

Also my friend.. Lots of new Buck owners only have old threads to view to make up their mind on a purchase which is what i did. Thank god for old threads for new folks.

Can you provide any proof of the bold text in your quoted statement above? I'm not saying you're wrong but I would like to know this for a fact if it's true.

All of my Custom Shop knives have rivets (including my bone 503) and they appear to be functional. The rivets are domed on the outside and I can see where they are pressed into the liners inside the blade well. Both are characteristics of functional pins.

No signs of any sanding around the pins that I can see.

I spoke with Buck today myself. All Buck knives other than stag have rivets that actually hold the knife together. But in custom shop they said the rivets are just for looks and glued on stag.. This is what Bucks custom shop told me today on the phone.

May depend on the piece of stag used when she talked about sanding but the are just for looks on stag per custom shop. Anyway 1-800-326-2825 ext 4. Is who i called. Was very interesting. She acutally talked me into no pins as I was leaning to pins.
