custom backpacks

I just checked out Kifaru's site... they make Mystery Ranch look like Jansport.

I guess fit would be the only deciding factor.

Yeah, I'd be interested. I've been reading some of your posts and we both have that "couldn't this be better?" mentality.

Hey, I appreciate you reading all my posts. It's nice to have someone else with the same mentality. I figure if anyone would know how to make it better, its the people on this forum.

I love my Kifaru Scout. It's just about bombproof.

My pleasure... your interests are right up my alley.

I, too, have been on the perpetual quest for the "perfect" pack... I own several of the older model Mtn. Smiths, all modified at some point by me to make them more versatile (I've carried 4 guitars and two amps home on my back with 'em while cycling!), I've got a nice Osprey left over form my mtneering days... also modified to attach an old Mtn. Smith lumbar pack with fastex buckles - so it would be an ideal summit pack; and I don't know how many day packs from REI, Maxpedition, or CheaperthanDirt knockoffs of others I have laying around or have sold... Always looking for the right combination of suspension, main compartment size and pocket attangements...
Well, I bit the the bullett and order the new maodel by Kifaru - the XRay...
It took about 7 -8 weeks to get here, which is what they said on their site it would be with the increased demand from those going east, but it's worth the wait!
Like the original Mtn. Smiths, this pack has the phenomenal stability of my original Smith packs, with the added versatility of the MOLLE straps, bladder pouch and interior set up. It was a little smaller overall than I thought it'd be, but given I've reduced my outdoor activities to day hikes and commuting on foot or by bicycle, this bag has the versatility and comfort level I've been looking for...
However, I'd still like to be able to add more customization to it during the manufacturing process like the original post on this thread alluded to... After all, the more pockets it's got, the more I'll carry!!! :D

I had tossed around the idea of starting a business of modifying packs to suit peoples needs. So often you here people talk about their gear and wish "this" or "that" was different. I have always modified my own gear to suit my needs. I am in the process of building my business "Wildertools" ( www.myspace.com/wildertools ) to make leather bags/pouches, knives, hawks, steel strikers, etc... I have access to industrial sewing machines and considered the possibility of puchasing the particular pack a customer wants, fix it up to their specs and forwarding it to them.... sound worthwhile?

Ya that sounds pretty cool. You seem to have more access to machines and more knowledge than I do on the subject. Would you be interested in modifying packs for me or even custom making one? or are you not at that stage yet in your business.

Oh... I'm not there yet... I've got so much on my plate right now with my pouches and stuff (and I haven't even officially opened yet)... I'm just looking into future business expansion options.;)

Well good luck to you if you do start up.
