Greeting to all. I'm new to the forum and the knife hobby in general. I was hoping to get some advice, and this seems like the place. I have a specific design for a blade that I would like to have made by someone, but I've had a hard time finding out where to actually go for this. It's a defintely non-standard shaped blade about six inches long and it would be just the blade, no handle. I would want it made from stainless steel and polished to a mirror finish. Any advice on who could make something like this for me and what I should expect to pay?

First welcome to the forums. Glad to have you aboard.

Finding someone to make your blade should not be difficult. We may even have a few volunteers on this thread.

Price well that is a big question.
Do you want the knife forged or ground.
Depending upon the steel (or non steel) what type of heat-treat will be used.
There are a lot more variables to consider including but not all encompassing.
blade shape, blade material, experience/credentials of the maker, demand of the makers products. I would venture a guess that the price would range from 50 to thousands if you wanted to get real fancy.

There are less experienced makers that would not charge as much as more experienced makers (and visa versa too

.

My first thought is for you to go to a show talk to some makers and go with someone you are comfortable with. Seeing if anyone responds here and getting in touch with them to talk about the project is an alternative. You may end up making a friend who will ask you to their shop and teach you how do do it.

Welcome. I would suggest that you go have a look around the exchange area. Take a look at the For Sale by Maker. You should get alot of photos and might get a feel for whose styles you like. If you find someone, give them an e-mail. Make sure and include a sketch of your design as an attachment. I drives me nuts to get e-mails of how much for a 4" utility of my design. I have to e-mail them back and ask to see it. Takes alot more time than just sending it with the first post.

You want stainless so that means stock removal, not forged. All other details such as steel type you can work out with the maker you chose.

I hope that when you say no handle, you mean no handle slabs. Just bare steel where the slabs would be. If you really mean no handle, you might have a hard time finding a maker. I know that I will not grind what I can't hold

I would be willing to take a look. You can see some of my recent knives at the link below.

Thanks, and thanks for the reply.

Well, I do want stainless steel, or something else that won't corrode or need polished and the like. This isn't meant to be a functional blade, it's going to be a sword for a model kit. As such, all I really want is the look of it, and whatever is the cheapest or least complicated way to get that is fine. It doesn't have to have a sharp edge even.
The mirror finish is the most important part, and it needs to be a true mirror. The dimensions would be 5 and half inches long and 5/32nd of an inch wide. Here's a picture I just took of the version I currently have, which isn't quite what I want.

Aha! If that is what you want, I suggest you look at Ken Warner's "Knives" Annual in the section on "Miniatures," and in the Feb 2001 issue of "Blade" Magazine for the article on miniatures. "Miniature" is a relative term, but I think your idea would fall into what these makers (e.g. Yvon Vachon and Hy Hytovick) would do.

Skyflight- have you ever checked out the links here? Maybe you could do some browsing of the Makers links and find someone who's style matches what you are looking for. WARNING: Be prepared to spend many happy hours in your search!
