Custom Bowie Pricing

John,
Its like anything you have custom built. Weather its a knife or a custom home. The whole idea is that you have a one of a kind, made just for you. The problem with a custom knife for the maker is resale. If you ordered a 4" stag handled drop point hunter. I would make that knife no problem. I know I can sell it should you be unable to accept the knife when finished.( Not saying you would back-out, this is just an example). Life happens. I work with a long back-log after 2 years you call a customer and say I am ready to start your knife , all is good. 2 months later you call to report it's finished. "Oh man I can't accept delivery, my wife left me ,I lost my job ( Thank-you guys in DC). and I'm living on my parents couch". I'm not stupid a custom knife is a self indulgence, not a necessity. This guy has more to worry about than a new knife. Never the less I'm stuck selling the knife. This is why I don't do weird knives. ( Your knife is a pretty straight forward western style Bowie except for the snake carved in the blade, on this project I would require a 50% deposit) I'm just trying to give you some incite to what a maker thinks about before taking on such a project.

I am never going to have it made because by now and by reading comments left here the idea of a custom knife just seems like a headache
As much of a headache as it seems to you, it is potentially much more so to a maker who takes on a project like this. The offers you recieved were more than fair,IMO, but this thread as whole re-affirms my decision to not do customer designs except on a very limited basis.
