Custom Bowie

Thank you for the help. I looked at that bowie you put a link to, but I did not like the blade shape. I like a somewhat pronounced clip point. Not too pronounced though. The canal street you showed me was pretty close to what I was looking for. Ideally I would get the Outback Bowie, but there are too many horror stories here on the forums and elsewhere. Basically, if a custom maker could make a reproduction/in the same vein knife, that would be perfect. The only problem is once I pick something out and commit to it, I don't like waiting. I could roll the dice and buy the outback and hope I am one of the lucky few to get a great knife, but I also have read about a lot of CS complaints, so I really don't want to buy it for that reason as well. I actually don't really care about price that much anymore. I was going to buy another mountain bike but I just bought one last month so I will just use that money towards a knife. The most important thing though, is that I get a useable knife. Everything I buy, cheap or expensive, I put to use.

Thank you for the advice meanwhile. I do want to use the knife, so you think it would be best to forgo a custom and get a high end production bowie?

Yes. Custom doesn't necessarily mean good - some custom makers do positively stupid things in heat treament for example, and the real quality of a custom knife can be hard to assess.

I'd at least consider a Swamp Rat Rodent 911 or Scrapyard Psyko 911 (google to understand why.) The Rodent looks like this

- about $300 new on ebay. Less tradional than you want perhaps, but very high quality and an ironclad lifetime warranty.

Wow. Well good luck to you in the search.

Thank you very much. I really appreciate your help, and I am considering getting the canal street you showed me earlier.

I do a fair number of bowies- there's a page at www. Vermontbladesmith.com with some, and a fair number on the j w bensinger bladesmith facebook page (can't post pics here with my phone). Happy to do custom stuff too.
And if you break it, I fix it or replace it. (unless you decide to cut your bulldozer in half with it- that might require a conversation first) :)
