*here goes nuthin'*

*ahem*

Well, a number of months ago I decided to have my first custom folder created. Look left and you'll see- I've been here on BF since WAAAAY back when it was actually smaller than knifeforums (remember that?) and even before that when rec.knives and the benchmade forums were king. Heck, I even remember when Dexter Ewing had a website! (Who was that girl in the background?) So anyway, I think my first custom has been long overdue! Ok, enough reminiscing. Down to business!

I decided on a Mayo TNT because of it's novel construction materials, because he seemed very willing to work with me, and because of all of those great pics you guys keep posting!!! I took a look at his existing designs and decided that I wanted a little more postitive front guard and a bit of a bird's beak to keep the knife locked into my hand when drawing back on cuts.

I sent off a crude drawing, and he made a model literally taken off the page- an extremely faithful representation of what I had drawn:

Ok, so actually he made two models- I chose the one with more belly in the scales to work with because I thought it would feel better in my hand. However, I thought that it lacked an aesthetic quality, and we both communicated via emails regarding improvements that we thought would benefit the piece. My biggest issue with the knife was how ugly the bird's beak looked, and I was feeling sick because I knew that it was represented exactly as I had drawn it on paper. Basically, I wanted him to make it look right, but I didn't know how!!!

Ask, and ye shall receive!!!

Eureka!!!!
Basically, as I told him- he made what I WANTED, not what I ASKED FOR! GENIUS!!!
I think the butt curve is beautiful, keeps the bird's beak where it needs to be, and adds some class to a previously brutish looking piece.

Add some holes, round the curves, and waaa-laah!!

And so as I type this, a new custom designed TNT is hurtling towards me from Hawaii!!!! I can't WAIT!!!!!! *AAAARRG!!*

(and secretly, the pain of waiting feels soooo good- you know what I mean)

Hope you liked it!

Ohhh man, that's schweett! It's killing me. I've been lusting after one of Tom's TNT's for a while, but it's not going to be possible for a little while. Then you show me this! I hope Tom Mayo will offer this as a regular model now (TNT-GC?). I would have probably gone with the top blade profile, but they are both good shapes. The handle looks very secure without restricting the versatility of the grip positions.

Greg,

Very nice finished result. Let us know how it "feels"...

Greg, a very nice knife and a great story! Thanks for sharing. I think this TNT concept has really taken off, thanks in part to Tom's holey pictures that appear like mystical manifestations of the divine wherever you look around here.

Way to go Tom!

and I did make it into a new model...sorta.

Looks sweet Greg!

That's the way I like to see it work; describe what you want and let the maker come up with the solution.

Both you guy's did good.

Just set it as my wallpaper.

That's a beauty! Very nice.

Tom, I hope you had a good flight back home. It was great hanging out with you again this weekend...glad you pretty much sold out.

I got to play with more of his knives this weekend. All quality. Actually, one of them had a slight problem (Tom would considers it a serious problem) so he wouldn't sell it (even though he could). This new little flair at the butt end is cool!

Thanks for all the nice comments, great experience with my first true custom! Goood to hear the Bizarro (tm) did well at the show. I was going to put up some side by side size shots with a small seb, but my scanner went kaput.

I'll see what I can cook up here.
