So after reading an article in Blade about how Tim Potier makes his pocket axes, I've been bitten by that bug. It helps that I really like Mr. Potier's method of forge welding the heads together. I welded one up yesterday and it's turning out quite well so far.

I'd like to see some examples of finished camp axes, and I know you guys can deliver! :) I know Ray Richmond has been doing some of these recently (and they are awesome!), but I'm wondering what other makers dabble in the axe/hatchet arena.

Let's see those little choppers!

Knowing Ray, I'm sure he'll chime in, even though you called him Ray Richmond, instead of Ray Richard. He's a great guy, but will probably give you some grief over it. :D

See what one too many beers before posting will do for you?!

Sorry Ray! :D

But Deker where is the pictures of yours? :)

They'll be posted once it's closer to done. Right now it's just a (slightly crooked) forging with the scale ground off. Once it's presentable it'll be here :)

Here's a few from Ray Richmond. :D Deker, here's where the edit button would come in handy. Normally I remember making most of my work but seem to have forgotten doing the second one down. Must be early CRS coming on.

Here's a few pictures of a 3" double bit camp axe from my buddy, Dan Warren, JS of Bethel, NC. It is cast D2 with a nice curley maple handle.

After I said I didn't remember making that one I thought you may have been the one to receive it. Axle Roy, may his name remain in my mind forever......

Well, since Scott had already pointed it out, I figured I'd better just leave it and take my lumps :)

Thanks for posting those Ray. It's fantastic inspiration for the finish work on mine. I especially like the fact that you don't just shrink an axe handle for these. Your handles really look like they're comfy as all get out.

Thanks,

Thump, thump, thump... :p

NICE stuff fellas!

Now I've got one more thing to save up for... Ray that top one is real nice, I've got a weakness for that dark brown color on the handle.

I really like that double bladed ax by Dan Warren.

Here is one I bought a few years ago forged by a fellow named Sabin. He forged it from an old lathing hammer.

Here is a new Hunter axe design I am making. I developed the integral full tang design for some Military projects I have been working on and figured it would work well with a Hunting/camp Axe design. The overall length is about 13" with a 5 1/2" head. The steel is S-7 with a full integral tang and either maple, walnut or rubber handle scales. The weight is a little over 1 1/2 lbs. The belt carrier is waxed 10oz belt leather. I figure the price will come in around $400 as soon as I put together all my time and material studies.

That's a riggers ax. I used them over 30 years ago when I use to frame houses when I first moved to Oregon. If there was any forging done to it I'd be surprised. I'm thinking most the work to change the look was done with a grinder. Here's a link to a riggers ax: http://www.contractortalk.com/f14/riggin-axe-46626/ I was told more than once that they were an illegal tool to have on the job. Just to dangerous to have on a job.

I am playing around with some small Broadhead Hatchets used by bowhunters back in the day. I forged this one from a piece of 5160 5/16 X 1 1/2 X 5 inches. The finished hatchet is about 9 1/2 inches and 1/4 inch thick. The handle is Sambar Stag, Silicon Bronze, and nickel/silver. Lin
