Custom Camp Axes

Ray, have you made anything in the range of a 24" handle?
I'm thinking that what I really need is a limbing axe, and it would be a real treat to see something like that from your shop, if you have any pictures handy.:)

Lorien, As of yet I have not made any axes that size. This is the only limber I have at this time:

Oh......... :D

Last year I bought a nice size chunk of O-1 from Chuck Richards with the intent of using it for the size ax you are looking for. It was 1" X 1 5/8" and I think 36" long. I figured I could get at least a 6" cutting edge without any problems and I'm sure my calculations were pretty close. This is where the CRS kicks in, I keep forgetting I'm 61 years old. It turns out I just couldn't move that steel by hand. I'm thinking I may go to a friends tomorrow or the next day and maybe make some damascus. If I remember I'll bring that chunk of steel along.

Hey Ray,

What ever happened to the first one you posted... if you don't mind my asking?

:D

And I still like the small one at the bottom... It was out of a piece of Damascus, wasn't it? And those handles - I love 'em still!!!

Gonna be at Eugene this year? If so, see ya there!

Joe, I hope you know what happened to the first one unless you misplaced it. The little one is indeed damascus. I'll be looking forward to seeing you in Eugene!

Still got! :D Just need a custom sheath for it.... Anybody got any ideas?!?!?!
Something I can carry dangling from a belt, or able to strap to my pack...
maybe we'll see if we can come up with some ideas in April!

Here is one I did, surly not as classic as the ones I see in this thread

I just love throwing sharp objects at targets! This little fella looks just right :).

Here's a few pictures of a 3" double bit camp axe from my buddy, Dan Warren, JS of Bethel, NC. It is cast D2 with a nice curley maple handle.

So I think I just picked up one of Dan's axes. How do I find out more information about it?
