I am down to three production fixed blades that I still use, including my Helle Fjellkniven, Kellam Wolverine and an old Disston machete. I am now looking for a custom camp knife to replace my Camp Tramp. Doesn't have to be a big beast like that one was. I would like to go custom, preferably an old timey  look to it, but I am considering a Bark River Mountain Man. Carbon or tool steel blade preferred. Looking for different makers and their models. Max blade lenght would be about 6". Maybe not really camp knives to some :o. NO BOWIES :grumpy::D:foot:.

Several makers that I have in mind are

David Farmer, Scott Gossman, Butch Harner, Larry Nowicki, Stomper, ML Knives, Idaho Knife Works, Diving Sparrow knife works. Can anyone recommend any others?

I have one of Larrys knives right now, its in the spa in his shop. I have had a Tusker and Buffalo knife from Scott, traded them off because I was an idiot.

This was posted here because a lot of the makers in the Makers Exchange section make some very nice, traditional styled, big blades. They seem to be featured here quite prominently ;).

Also, even though it is out of my preferred blade length range, I am looking at Hudson Bay camp models, including from BRKT.

I have abunch of David Farmer knives and recommend them highly!
Good working blades that hold an edge very well.
be safe...

Try Nick at NWA Knives.
I've got a Camp knife on order from him that is nice.
Have his 5" Sierra Scout and love it. (That was the Bladeforum Knife awhile back)

Just out of curiosity, what did you do with your camp tramp?

Cheers

I hacked up a couple of stumps, before I knew what fatwood was, and Scott "cleaned" it up. Other than that, I haven't used it, one of the reasons she's gone :D.

BTW, I do have models from Larry, Scott, David, Butch, ML and Stomper. The only "camp" style model I have right now though, is from Larry.

We are sure lucky to have such great knife makers here with us. It's really hard to choose between them as they do quality work at good prices, a hard combination to beat. I have knives from JK, DP and Koyote and could not be happier with thier products. My tough camp knife is Stompers Super Duty. The Koyote is probably the most versitile being thinner and a great slicer. The DP's are great user knives and tough a nails.

I would agree with two already mentioned. I highly recommend David Farmer and Koyote knives. They can make you what you want, but they have models that fit that bill already. Great knives at great prices.

David made me a custom Nessie with a 4.5 inch blade that is great. Also have one of his neckers.

I have a Bushcraft leuku from Christof (Koyote) that is fantastic.

Bryan Breeden hasn't yet been mentioned - but his peacemaker series is a nice 6" camp. Can be had in a variety of thickness - Bryan is one of those guys who will make the knife you want.

:thumbup::thumbup: on Stomper (JK) and Koyote knife recommendations also.

we definately have some great makers here on this forum... so many of them more than willing to do custom designs as well, if you have something in mind.. JK, KOYOTE, Ray Laconico, Fiddleback, ML knives, Robert Dark, David Farmer and Charlieridge knives.. just to name a few...

here is a bushcrafter i got recently from Christof of KOTOTE knives... it looks very similar to EJES's knife...

I also have a Peace Maker under the Christmas Tree :D

might want to check koyote knives. christofs wilderness models 1 and 2 would probably both fill the bill.

If I'm reading the dimension right, it's more the PSK knife with a set of handle scales or flat cord wrap.

I'm goign to go against the run of the mill here and suggest that for an SAK you look at what's REALLY needed and what you don't get from other ingredients on your kit. My choice would be for a Compact, which is just about the lightest really versatile model they make. If you simply must have a saw in your PSK, you might want to look at something else, like a dedicated pruning saw blade from a foldign pruning saw. You can make a handle in the field.

Breeden Peacemaker or a JK Kephart if you want to go with forum members. Both are great camp knives. I particularly like my 1095 Kephart with convex edge. Perfect size and it makes a great food prep knife.

Breeden's Pathfinder is also a really cool design. It has some great lines.

If you want to go production, I really like BRKT's new full-tang Kephart. The handle is a lot smaller though. If you have sizable mitts, I'd go with the JK version. Plus, it's just a little cooler than a production knife.

Bill Siegle -- highly functional, durable, and keen cutting knives at decent prices. Contact him to coordinate the design of your knife.... the website linked below hasn't been updated in forever (so far as I can tell) and conveys not even a small shadow of what he can make.

Brian Wagner (of Okuden sheaths fame) -- knives with a no-nonsense approach, but with a tactical orientation. Don't let that fool you. His knives are A2 steel with Paul Bos heat treat and are plenty bombproof. I recommend his Sharp Thing II with its approximately 4" blade.

If money is no limit, contact Nick Wheeler. :D

That knife is wicked bad! Does Mr. Fowler have a website? I can find a fowler, but I think his name is Ed....

Can you tell us any more about that knife...what are it's dimensions, what kind of steel? Have you worked it yet? It looks like it is made for some serious work. Any hints about how much that beut set ya back? That looks like it might be a replacement for a Busse. :-)

agent iron-- thanks for the compliments... i have been searching for one of these knives for about 5-6 years now... i am sooo stoked to finally have one...:D i love it... i have used it a few times since i've had it... performs like a dream..

Ricky(not Ed) Fowler is long time knifemaker out of AK.. he is no longer making knives, so coming across one of these beasts might be pretty hard... they are out there though.. i just so happen to randomly score this one, many thanks to another forum member.... we worked out a nice trade.. when they were available, the price was comparable to Busse's... $300 +...

i also do not think that he has any relation to Ed or Stephen Fowler...
