Custom Chopper Wanted

I'm in the same boat you are. I carry two when I pack; the chopper shown and a smaller utility knife (which I vary based on what I feel like carrying-here I haven't found 'the one'). I still find that chopper more than adequate. However, I don't need a knife to bushwack (as you would use a machete). I feel more than comfortable taking on a 4" tree with that knife and that's about as big as I'd ever want to go, so I don't feel the need for something larger. It really is surprising what a well designed blade can do. With the wider blade and that profile, the balance gives good power behind chops. I hate to beat a dead horse here (especially since there are many good makers out there), but Burt has done several matching sets and I have a bowie/hunter that I love from him. He's also done the two-to-a-sheath thing.

All of that said, if you're looking for new ideas, I would google custom knives, go to a number of purveyors' sights, and start browsing. Some of them you can sort by style/type of blade. I'm sure you could get some suggestions of places to start looking.

Check out Charlie Edmonson on the Makers forums.... beware that his blades usually sell within 10 minutes of hitting the board.

For meaningful recommendations you need to provide two key pieces of information:

1) How much are you prepared to spend? If your budget is $500, there's no point in recommending a maker whose price is $1,200.

2) How long are you prepared to wait? If three months seems like a really long time to you, there's no point in suggesting a maker whose wait time is 2 years. You'd need to look to dealers or the sales forums.

Don't get too wrapped up in your specs - if you are having the knife made to order, the list of makers who can turn one out to your specs is VERY long indeed.

For some major chopper eye-candy - and also to help maybe identify makers you might not have been aware of, check out this chock-full-of-choppers thread:

And here's one that I am looking forward to taking out in the field real soon:

Nothing in the makers area fits the CHOPPER description :( I'll have to wait for something to come along, or perhaps someone will custom build one for me:eek:

There was just a Lamey chopper sold. Huge chopper, at a decent price too.

Just have to lurk and look. Or send an email to a few makers and ask them.
