The knife turned out great and the thread has been most enjoyable. I love the lignum vitae handle - I'm surprised we don't see it on more knives.

Phillip-always love seeing your work here on the forums. I keep my eyes open for something of yours to show up in the sales forum - I am always too late - your knives go quickly!!! Just wanted to say how nice your work is. Just looking at the photos, the high level of craftsmanship in your knives is evident - especially enjoyed the posts you put up showing the guitars you have created. I was saddened to read that you are no longer taking orders as I thought that that was the only way I would ever be lucky enough to purchase one of your knives - but that is entirely understandable as you appear to have numerous irons in the fire. This WIP has really been interesting.

VERY COOL Philip!!! I mean, it's kind of weird you finished it... ;) But VERY COOL!!! :)
Hi Nick .. IMVHO it's not finished yet :)

Ready to buff:

After buffing. The knife is essentially done now. There's a few scratches to remove, but I'll wait until the sheath is finished to do that. I'll take some "glamour shots" when the knife and sheath are both finished.

I used Goo Gone to clean the residue from the tape off of the blade, and also the buffing compound from the handle. The Goo Gone also turns the handle from green to brown.
Kindly CMIIAW :o
So .. still looking forward for the "glamour shots", Phillip :D

that knife looks like a ton of fun! Job well done and that knife will last FOREVER.

I hope that you follow this thread up in a few months to show how the wood changes color. I think it will look awesome:thumbup:

WOW. thank you so much for sharing these photos! I enjoy seeing the process! Great looking blade my friend! keep up the great work and thanks for taking us through the journey with you!!! A real beauty!

This was a very satisfying thread! Thanks for your hard work with all the photos and information Phillip! Just... wow! It must be awesome to have talent like yours.

Yes, I do use an oven, which is essential for hardening and tempering. I often anneal high alloy steels in my forge. For this knife, I actually annealed it in my oven while I was thermal cycling some carbon steel blades. Killed two birds with one stone.

Yep, you're right. It's not as tough as something like L6 or A2, but it is more wear resistant, as well as corrosion resistant. Like any steel, there are compromises.

verry impressive , i hope in my country do same way to heat treat D2 , and verry nice knive ,phillip ....

Lots of thanks to everybody for all the postings and the nice words! And my very special thanks to Phillip for the making of this great beautiful cutter/chopper for me :D

It really took a long time for this cutter/chopper to reached me and please don't be surprised that I just collected it from my friend last Saturday June 4, 2011. All this while the cutter/chopper is in Phillip's keeping before it was sent to Aunt Yangdu of HI. And then she sent it to my friend in Malaysia on the third week of May, 2011

Lately I got a problem with couples of Customs people in KLIA (i.e. Kuala Lumpur International Airport) due to a definition issue whereby they just consider whatever knife as always a weapon that has to be confiscated unless one has a special import permit for it! Unluckily my request for the special import permit was rejected! That's the reason why a special arrangement was needed so that the cutter/chopper had to enter Malaysia via airport other than KLIA to avoid it from unnecessarily being confiscated by those couples of Customs people :(

This large cutter/chopper is just awesome! At 18 1/2" OAL, 2" width at the widest part of the blade and 1/4" thick at the spine near to the ricasso still it feels light and fast in my hand! The handle is so comfy in my grip! The cutting edge is really scary sharp and I think this is one of the sharpest knife I have with me now

I owe all this to Phillip, Aunt Yangdu of HI and the friend who willingly received this knife on my behalf! Thank you very much for all the helps and everything :)
