Got an idea for a custom khukuri? Describe it, and I'll do a photo mock-up. :)

8-9" Tactical M43
- Blade: Black with only a small 1/8 inch of the bevel shined.
- Handle: Buffalo horn partial tang with groves dug into the horn every 1/4 inch for traction (similar to the USMC K-Bar)
- Metal: Bolster and butt plate made from anodized black metal
- Weight: Max 550 grams (Not including sheath and backup knife)
- Sheath: Black leather - quick draw - dropped thigh rig that can be worn on right side.
- Small file pocket hidden on the back of the sheath.
- Good sized backup knife, about the size of a EESE-3 or Bark River Gunny (or a leatherman?) placed on the front of the sheath like on the Fox's Folly. Snap closure.
- Firesteel loop on the back rim of the sheath
- Reflective material (2" x 3") on the back of sheath for signaling
- Beer cozy :D

I'll pre order two of those!

You know, it would be interesting if the chakmaks were made with two surfaces. The common steeling surfaces, and one side/edge that is surfaced like a mill file. Would allow for more hardcore material removal if needed. Also, if one were crafty, they may also be able to utilize the sheath as a strop.

Anyways, here ya go shortwinger. You're on your own with the sheath, Im afraid.

Somebody draft a blade only mockup then order just the blade. Then we can have all kinds of fun with the handle material; Canvas Micarta, G10, carbonfiber. If you do it just ask that; 1) no tang holes be drilled and 2) they not make the cut out for the bolster. Those we're my 2 biggest headache's when I did my rehandle. 3, it be made chiruwa and large the 5160 isn't bad to resize to hit the exact shape you want.

I can do actual drafting to produce printable schematics instead of just 2d photoshop stuff. Do need a starting point though. IE: a trace or scanned picture of an entire khukuri blade. Im having fun with this. :D

AFAIK, Auntie does not sell "blade only". The only time you will find bare blades is when they come up for sale on the DOTD because the original handle was too broken to fix.

Very cool!

Can you make the groves thinner and more of them? Kind of like the hair line grooves you often see in the current issue.

Is it possible to "ever so slightly" curve the handle to match the curve of the blade???

Also, if there is a small protrusion at the end of the handle (on the bottom by the bolser) to stop the hand from going forward that would be great. Not too obvious. (I know, I'm a pain in the butt!)

That really looks great. I would love to have that kukri. Very cool program too.

I've heard of it(blade only orders) a few times, it may have been more of a "I'll wait for a broken handle one since I'm going to re-handle it anyway" deal.
BTW why am I typing this when my 20" AK is on the porch? Nice shipping again Auntie!

If you could give me a picture to go off of for the handle texture, that would help. And what sort of guard? Like a normal Ka-Bar tang? And do you want the handle itself curved on a radius, or just at a more acute angle to to the blade?

I like the trench knife concept, not sure of the legality of it in certain areas. Could it be considered brass knuckles ?

Ive been thinking about a HI push dagger, heres a Rusty knife with some push daggers, maybe make it with a slight down curved blade (kerambit-esque), or 5-6" blade

Thank you stickfred.

I don't think it'd be too hard to ask Auntie to have the kamis make a few chiruwa khukuri blanks? Gotta admit I am a bit of a purist though, don't fancy tactical stylings on khuks, even if they do come with a cho. Only a personal opinion of course, take it with a grain of salt.

Karda, maybe this is a better question for Yangdu. Is it possible to get the handles (chiruwa) all wood(no bolster or cut-out for them) and laha only or smaller pin holes? I think this is the best we can get without getting blades only. Plus it gives the added benefit that people can use the knives to get a good feel of what direction they want to go with the handles should they choose to make any changes.
7rip13a, I'm not a big fan of the tacticool khukuri idea either but they may stumble on a utilitarian design in the process. Then they can have tacticool and we can have traditional the kami's have work and all are happy.
garand1911, since ka-bar has already been mentioned look up the TDI defense knife that might be a design we can show the kami's to arrive at what you are looking for.

7rip13a, I know that Bill got blanks for some people about 10 years ago. You might try emailing Yangdu and letting her know what you want. Perhaps she will be able to see if BirGorkha would supply one for you. The worst that could happen would be "No".

I am not a big fan of tactical kukris either. The word is over used and used incorrectly. Just for show.

I was just looking for a every day carry field kukri that can stand up to anything. This one was going to have a raw black blade just to keep it easy to maintain in the field, not because I was going to do any night time raids :-). The handle wasn't really going to look "at all" like the K-Bar, I was just trying to explain the grooves in the horn handle. The grooves will be finer than the K-Bar, more like the ones found in most buffalo horn handles (a bit deeper) except they will go all over the handle instead of just in the center. I would love this size kukri in a satin blade as well. It would be great to get an 8", 9" and 10" to compare performance. I don't have any kukris smaller than a 10.5" Jungle so I don't know what the smaller ones are like.

Bill give me a few days to finish sanding my 12" CAK re-handle I think you'll like the look I got on the blade between the vinegar & FeCL etch. A chainsaw file works real good for making grooves in horn or wood handles.

Oldschool,

I'll look forward to seeing it. Is that CAK 12" overall or a 12" blade??

12" OAL more to follow later. I also smoothed the spine and slightly curved it like an M43
