I just finished putting a new Micarta handle on a Cold Steel TrailMaster for a guy from this knife forum. It came out pretty well, still need a final polish, but I sent him pictures to see if any changes are needed before I finish polish it.
I usually put a single fingergrip type handle on but he wanted one like the original just a little thicker. The piece of crap original rubber grip that I took off is next to it.

I do it for beer money. I just replace handles with micarta or hardwoods

I've got an old Recon Scout I would like to send ya. Email me or p.m. me if you would. keepem sharp and excellant work

That does look good. My one qualm, and I'm not sure if it's the perspective or the reality, but it doesn't look like the top and bottom (spine and edge, not parallel to the flats) are even with the ricasso, which I always think adds greatly to the flow of the knife.

I tend to concentrate on ergonomics and what the guy that I am making the handle for wants. He requested a handle shape like the original but larger, so that is what I made.

If that's what the customer requested, who am I to argue? :p

Either way, good looking knife.

nice looking job...

that looks familiar, i think i saw it on your site the other day (don't remember how i got there)

very nice work all around.

Very nice!

Question: Did the rubber handle just slide off after you removed the lanyard pin, or was it epoxied to the tang?

Since it's all in one piece I'm betting it slid right off.

Thanks.

I don't have a site. I put a picture on the USN forum, maybe you saw it there.

They are not glued on so they do just slide right off. It's easy too because there is always a bunch of rust powder under there.I clean all of that off before doing anything else. I have taken apart a lot of these rubber handled knives by CS, SOG and others and they are always rusted up. It is really a bad idea to put this kind of handle on any knife, they really suck in so many ways. But, they are cheap and easy and lots of people think they are great.

And the Kraton can get gooey as they get older.
Thats happened and is still happening to a bunch of my Kraton handled knives.
I have a SOG Desert Dagger, really sweet knife but the kraton turned to sticky mush up near the handguard.
I rehandled it with white maple (the only hardwood i had on hand).
That was only the second knife i rehandled so its not perfect or anything.

Not even remotely in the same class as VJBs job on the Trailmaster!
Nice work!

vjb.knife;
Thanks again for doing this knife for me. The handle is very comfortable and it handles great. I believe the new handle makes the knife a 1000% better. I like the hollow tubes in the handle as well. It gives me extra lanyard placement options as well if I use this for chopping.

I just got it back today, on the 7th, and I can hardly put it down to type this. I do know, if I can get the stainless trailmaster or even the stainless recon scout I would like the same style of handle put on it by you. You do awesome work. I can't say it enough how pleased I am with your work. Have a nice day and take care.
