Traditionally used how? Designed as a hunter drop point for your custom knife- can be put to hard use or for show either way or both
Properties attributes- Damascus is 1095 and a nickel steel . Billet and roughed out by HH knives. I did the final shape- temper- and artwork. Not a lot of layers of folds but nice looking and hand forged along the edge to compress internal steel structure. Edge was hardened slightly harder than usual, (using a torch and oil quench) back is left soft. carved a brass brazing rod to a point without dulling or chipping. Made for a field or utility knife, probably not good for chopping due to extra hard edge- unless you draw the hardness out yourself.
Stuff to know I did not equalize. If you want to heat to 350, this is sometimes done, or you can draw back the hardness with a torch. I leave that up to you. I’d personally use it ‘as is’ it has been tested and did not chip. Oh a final polish is necessary probably taken down to about a 1,000 grit. I think a red rouge would be sufficient to shine it up and not mess with the Damascus pattern. If so it is not hard to bring the pattern back out. Building any knife does require some basic knowledge. In truth this might not be a perfect choice for a simple kit makers experience. This blade if handled well can go on a retail value $1,000 knife. Thus great idea for someone with ‘some skill’ who wants a personal awesome knife but can not afford the $1,000. Or put an ok handle on and it’s a easy $500 knife. If more info is needed I can inform the buyer of any other details of interest.

Personal story-- connection I did a fun trade for the blank rough for some mammoth ivory I had. I did a nice freehand acid etch in the steel. Picture does not do it justice hard to photo etching. Etching is crisp and deep. One side has a running wolf, other side a pintail duck swimming. I hammered copper and brass along the spine as I was forging. I do not know of anyone else doing this and have been experimenting as one of my trademarks. If a knife maker knows of this kind of work being done- let me know – be fun to exchange notes! Has no effect on structure of the steel but copper brass chemically combine with steel and is permanent indestructible decoration. This is a very distinct unique blade unlike anything else no patterns used no repeat design all freehand. Will make a fine custom knife for someone. I just – well- have 7 other blades right now, no time to build the knives- so just as soon part with em as is and press on.

A little about me and my materials.
On blade forum here, I am both a dealer in raw materials and a custom knife maker. So you can expect to see me in both places. I began in about 1970 as an artist knife maker. Lived alone in the Alaska wilds as a hermit mountain man, trapping, living subsistence, out of touch with civilization. As part of my lifestyle I traveled a lot, living on a houseboat- so got known in most remote native villages. In time I got to be trusted as in the old times, a trapper trader. I also learned my animal parts, what they can be used for, how they hold up under different uses. Knife making being one aspect. In time I ended up with way more material then I can use in a lifetime, plus had knowledge. At art shows (never done a knife show in my life) I began seeing that other dealers became my customers. When the show is slow- vendors are a captive audience. When internet came along there seemed a great interest in the raw materials, so that part of business grew. I go to the big Tucson fossil show each year where my mother lives. I know most of the major players from around the world now. I advertize on my web site that I trade. This is now world wide. So I wheel deal barter sell buy restore design etc etc – adaptable I suppose to changing times, and keeping it ‘fun’. Some material I find myself, like mammoth ivory and bison bones. (this allows me to write off my boat as a business expense- got it all figured out. Some materials I get locally like wolf claws and moose bones. Some items I have a great deal of knowledge about. Other items I carry and only know a little bit about. I am unsure how much I will get posted. I tend to be busy and need time away from the (stupid) computer. I’m pretty much a one man operation. I have an in depth biography (even two books out) – how to, and advice- sections on my web site- with extensive pictures of Alaska and where I get materials and such for those interested. Many of my customers like to have a connection in some way to the material and knife they build. www.milesofalaska.net
