Hello Knife makers,

I am looking for someone who would be willing to work with me on a custom knife project. I am looking to purchase a survival knife for a newly minted naval aviator. I was hoping to design/have something made that would be great for survival, something he could bet his life on. I was leaning towards a Damascus blade, fixed, about 5-6 inches, perhaps with a seat belt cutter/rope cutter along the spine (not sure the technical handle). If anyone knows of a knife maker taking on custom work or if any of you are willing to do so, please send me an e-mail which can be found in my profile.

Thanks.

Many here can built a knife like that for you. Most of the knives here don't need a seat belt cutter or rope cutter though. We can make such additions but, one of mines cutting edge will go thru a piece of say 3/4" hemp rope like nothing was there. Or do you want something like saw teeth? I think the best thing for you would be to give a approx price range and type of handle material you would like. Jim

I'm not too experienced on the actual names of different handle materials, however I did like the look and function of the handles on the Rat-3 http://www.ratcutlery.com/rc-3.htm.

Price.... looking around $300-$500. I understand these knives will be sharp enough to cut through rope no problem, but this is for a combat pilot. I was envisioning a situation where cutting off a seat belt tight against his body would be necessary, and that's why I was considering including the cutter. Saw teeth would not be really desirable... too hard to sharpen, and if the knife is kept in good enough shape, it would be able to chop through whatever small material is needed.
