Here is something I wanted to post, just finished up for a horseman's knife going to Blade show.

My idea for this knife was a desktop display that would show the knife along with the custom turned oil bottle that I made up.

Here are the specs.

English Walnut
Elephant inlays around the four edges
Recess for the oil bottle and knife , blue flock
Quartz clock

Please share your thoughts on this display and feel free to post pictures that you may have with your traditional pocket knives displayed in a similar manner.

Ken, a wonderful idea and beautifully done.

Thanks a lot for now making my own desk seem so under-dressed! ;) :D

shux, that's a whole bunch* of a lot nicer than my set up....

Change the clock to a mechanical, and it'd be perfect. Quartz just doesn't fit in.

Ken,
first of all, thanks for posting this, it's a great idea and a wonderful job.
I will take the liberty of adding a couple thoughts about this.
There are two things that (in my personal opinion) I would possibly change about this set/display.
The first one, is the flock color. Not that I don't like blue...but I would have rather preferred a more neutral color (like ivory/cream, for example). Especially considering that the scales of the knife are dark.
The second one, is the shape of the "knife bed". This one looks alot like a "showing" display, and it looks great with the "finger nicks" (don't know how to call them). But if I close my eyes, and see myself as a wealthy gentleman with excellent taste in knives, I would actually use this set, put my knife in it as I'm sitting at the desk, and putting it back into my pocket as I get up from the chair to leave.
Around here, many people use this kind of "desk tray" things (a "pocket emptier", translating it literally from Italian), and I'm sure that a bigger "bed" for the knife would be more comfy, while I would keep the "oil bed" fit for the bottle. If it were mine, I would expand the "knife bed" (same width of the "finger nicks" but all around the knife) to make it a more natural move to put the knife there and get it back.
Again, I'm getting really really critical on this object, and I'm aware of it. The reason is, I find it absolutely awesome, and it drives me into the tiniest details of it.

Ken,

I think that is an amazing piece of work. The knife is enough of a masterpiece to stand alone. Add the hand made display piece and it is one of the most amazing sets I have ever seen.

I can't think of a negative aspect to any of it. To be able to say you made it all yourself is also out of this world.

Thanks everyone for the comments and GREAT suggestions! Making something like this desktop display is something completely new and foreign for me.

Fausto,

I really like your comment about the cream colored flock. It would have complemented the ivory great.

Thanks again for the feedback guys! It will make the next one I build better.

I'm still laughing. :-)

Ken, beautiful work once again. Is the clock mounted via ball-and-socket, or is it fixed? Either way, a very nice touch.

Were this on my (space-challenged) desk, I might wish for more use of the solid wood area, ie, perhaps a small, open area (lined as the others) in which to place items (a good pen, or a loupe, or...) without having to be custom fit.

At the same time, I understand why you would want to keep things minimal, to clearly highlight the pieces you have chosen.

Wow.

What a stellar set. I don't mind the blue flock. Much better to my eye than red or green. I agree that ivory or cream or other natural color would not have been bad, but like I said, the blue looks great.

The knife is to die for. So cool.

Truly outstanding work. I do not know what would improve it.

Very nice work, sir.

I wouldn't mind having something like that but I'd have to clean my desk off to have somewhere to put it.
