Hey Tom
I asked the same question two years back before I started a wreck diving course.
I carry shears and a 3 1/2 inch Polkowski in 440V his knives are reasonably priced and designs work well underwater.
Kit Carson makes the ultimate dive knife the U2,Ive been waiting for years for one in 6K..but for recreation its a tad big and to rare a bird to risk losing.
there are plenty of options out there but you have to ask yourself what the application is and how much can you afford to lose if you have the misfortune.
I had Kit Carson make me a U2 for me while I was in the navy and doing a lot of diving out in Guam. He makes the knife in two sizes. If I could do it all over again I would get the smaller version because mine is just to big. Don't get me wrong, it is a great knife, but just to big for recreational diving.
Kits design is fantastic,I favor a chisel tip for prying, partially serrated blade with sharpened band cutting top clip. the utes run 5 1/2 and 6 1/2 those are seriously big tools..we gotta prod Kit into doing one a hair under 4 inches..perfect for recreational diving. http://www.kvnet.org/knives/ph5.htm
