Hello WSS,

I thought you guys would appreciate this.

I bought 20 ferro rod blanks a couple weeks ago. My idea was to use the same handle material and match up handles on both knife and ferro rod.

Well I got my first one (almost) done and thought you guys would be interested in it. It is not dead on perfect, but it is close. I need to practice a bit with my drill press.

and with the knife, both need some finish work then a sheath.

Thanks for looking,

I love it. I really like the dark wood. The knife looks impressive. Is it for sale?

Thanks Ottoshot, The wood is Cocobolo. I really like working with it. It finishes well, I haven't even buffed it yet.

Also, I didn't mean this as a sale thread, yes it will be, I will PM you...Thanks!

Good stuff.

One thing I wish more maker would do is angle the ferro rod. Give it a slight say 10 degree angle. Makes it easier to draw from the sheath (if thats were your keeping it) and makes it easier to strike the sparks into your fire bundle. I guess it just gives the hand a more natural angle to throw the sparks where you want them.

Sooo don't make them TOO perfect.;)

That looks great and I like that knife design too. Matched ferro rods and knives look great riding in sheath together.

Tarmix,

I will give it a try! Thanks.

Hey Thane - thanks. Ya, I am looking forward to trying some more.

Great-looking kinfe, tell us more!

Nice ferrod rod too :)

Hey Jack,

Sure, it is 1095, professionally HTed and tested to Rc 58-59. OAL if 8 5/8, edge is 4 1/4, it is made out of 1/8 by 1 1/4 Inch stock. I ground the blade with a taper from the Ricasso out to the tip. So it should slice very well. The Handle is Cocobolo, about 3/4 at its widest point, but contoured well to be comfortable in hand.

I am making a sheath for it thus weekend.
Thanks,
John

I still have my blanks sitting there, but I finally got a chunk of soapstone to make some handles for it.
