I'm not sure this is in the right place. Mods, feel free to move please if not.
A cousin of mine (truly my friend) goes on several camping expeditions with his team each year. On a recent excursion in the woods with me for several days, while perusing my kydex work, he inquired about my custom fire steel. Discussion continued and I started a small fire with it to demonstrate how it worked.
Intrigued, he asked if I could make him a larger version to throw in a pack and take with him. Admittedly, the guys he camps with from work are mostly city folk and have zero experience with making fire with steels and the like. I thought this would make an interesting conversation piece for the newbs in camp.
What started out as a large fire steel, ended up being a "kit", complete with my custom kydex sheaths that he could easily throw in a bag or pack and have with him all the time on camping trips. The steel is 5"x1/2" and imbedded 1-1/2" into the micarta.
The steel is handled with canvas micarta. Left natural to show the grain and pick up the oils from the hands from using it - giving it some character. This is the second one I ever made. The last pics are the first I ever made for a kydex customer of mine.
The striker is made from a sawzall blade and I added Sand Ghost G10 with a brass pin.
Keep in mind, I'm only an amateur. Thoughts, comments, criticisms, and advice is welcomed.
