Hi Im looking for a good EDC custom fix blade for around $40, $50 max. any suggestions? kydex sheath is a plus :D steel does not matter.

That's a very low price range for a custom, considering the time, materials, and effort that go into making a knife. Still, they do pop up that cheap from time to time. Keep an eagle eye on the For Sale By Maker forum section and watch for new makers, or some regular seller sometimes make batches of small knives. Probably not going to include a sheath for that price though.

You might also be interested in buying just a blade to finish yourself. I've seen some nice-looking blades for well under $50 recently. These particular blades are marked Sold already, but an example of what to watch for:

Good luck in your search.

Track of the Wolf, Crazy Crow, Ragweedforge, Thompsonknives, bensbackwoods... there are a bunch more. Many of them are production blanks, but you can buy some scandinavian forged blades from the last 3.

I think there's a guy Jeff White who makes some blades in the range you're talking. Check out his work and see what you think. (I don't know him and don't have any of his knives... I've just seen pictures and reviews.)

The only custom knife I have ever bought in that price range (and one of the few I have ever seen in that price range) was a tiny Kiridashi from James McGowan like the one at far left. And that was many a good year ago.

I think it's going to be tough to go custom at your price point.

When you find a custom knife for under $50, I'll trade you an SAK for it.

Is this guy a complete idiot or is he just mocking us here?

Try Greg for a little necker. I think he might be over the $50 but for a custom ground high carbon steel knife in that price range I think your choices will be limited.

Greg's a member of the forums. He also has a few of his neckers he ground out for the Oregon OKCA show in April in the Shoptalk sub forum right now.

Tell you what dude. Send me an email ( fast14riot@gmail.com ) fill out your profile, and I might be able to help you out. I have plenty of material I got at no cost to me and feel that passing on the savings is the right thing to do.

I was just talking with a friend(Gus Kalanzis) about the costs of making a knife, and it seems to me that $100.00 for a US PRODUCTION knife is fair, double that for a custom maker price.

This is about as close as I can get you to your price range for a custom. I bought one and it's a great knife and a real value if you don't have XL hands. Check his threads or send him a PM. He's fast and he is great to deal with. Tell him that I sent you. Good luck - WB

WB, thanks for the compliments. I hope the one you got is treating you right.

And to the OP, it's hard enough to find a GOOD production fixed blade knife for less than $50, much less a custom. I sell my smaller neck knives for $65 to $75 because I'm a new maker and want to get my name out there. If I make a batch of 3 or 4 together, that saves me some shop set-up time but I've still probably got 5-6 hours in each small knife, probably $10-$15 in raw materials, $5 in sheath materials, shop materials like epoxy, sandpaper and sanding belts, propane for the forge, shipping, PayPal fees, etc, etc. Figure in wear and tear on shop equipment, electricity, and I'm probably making about $0.50/hour. I'm not trying to disrespect you or anything, just show you what is involved costwise in making a knife. I obviously don't do it for the money, I do it because I like to and I enjoy it.

Again, a $50 custom is going to be hard to find based on the time involved. You can search my posts; I do have a few for sale right now if interested.

For 50 bucks I would'nt be expecting much. The old saying "you get what you pay for" applies here.Even newer makers will likely be priced over that sum, but who knows, you might get lucky.

Hey Mohab, nobody is making fun of you here but Mr. Nance is spot-on. With some production knives you may pay for the brand name, so to speak, but customs are different. Are there bargain customs to be found? Sure, but rarely. In most cases, the old adage, "You get what you pay for" applies greatly to custom knives. That's just based on my experience as someone who owns more custom knives than I care for my wife to know about. It takes quality materials and more-over time to build a quality knife. The time, care, and attention to detail are what you are paying for. in my opinion, it is well worth the price.
