Custom folder carry question

This my EDC, A Fong in a Long.

Well, let's consider the very knife in question:

It is a Bradshaw with incredible popcorn stag and a Sawby self lock.

If I just drop it into my otherwise empty pocket, I am concerned about lint and whatever else getting into the self-lock mechanism. For that reason, I am tempted to go with some type of case. Also, I obviously want to be tres careful with the stag. On the other hand, for a knife this size, it is fairly thick, again due mostly to the nice scales. For me to get a case, I feel I will likely need a custom case because of that thickness, at least after a brief PM to Mr. Long. Yet, I do not want something that is either going to make it a pain to get to the knife, or make it a pain to simply carry the knife because the case and knife are a bit thicker.

I think you guys can see my dilemma.

I have attached a picture of the kind of sheath which I like for my custom folders. It's easy to carry on a belt and still slim enough if you like to carry in your pocket.

It's a design by Daniel Boll and copied by several knifemakers here in Germany.

I keep a small tape measure, Silver Eagle, Tac flashlight, toothpick case and daily pill case in the same pocket that I carry a knife in....it's just not worth the hassle of bashing good scale material to carry without a Clipcase.

And I keep the pocket with my knife empty of anything but my knife. Can't stand to have my pockets filled with crap; that's what the man bag is for. :p

I do agree that if you carry other items with your knife, some sort of Clipcase or slip case makes perfect sense.

One of the advantages of the Sawby self lock is the tight tolerances leave very little room for lint or other dirt to get into the mechanism. I carry a Bradshaw (black lip pearl) interframe with the Sawby self lock to work. Originally, I used the slip case Bailey provided with the knife, but don't anymore. Haven't had any problems with lint.

Bailey does put some incredible popcorn stag on his knives. I also have a small folding bowie in 3V and stag that he made for me a few years ago.

TKC, your link itself didn't work for me, although I could see enough of the URL to get to the page you intended. Looks like some good stuff.

And thanks to everyone who has contributed to this thread. You guys have offered up some great options to think about.

My right front pocket is reserved - knives only.
This is in there today. No purse. I have carried it often and finish is still nice.
Couple of times a week I use a can of compressed air and a pipe cleaner to clean out the pocket fuzz.

Arne Mason is a top leatherworker. Michael Walker and Ron Lake ship their knives in Mesa Case work.

Last year, he made me a case for a pair of titanium chopsticks that J.P. Holmes gifted me at the OKCA Show in Eugene….the workmanship is fantastic, the goatskin shell tough, as thin as possible, and attractive….that said, Arne charges 2x as much as any other leatherworker I know AND the flapped top makes drawing and using the knife a two handed proposition, which I why I recommended the ClipCase.

Gus, I don’t know how some of you fellas keep your knives looking so good…..my customized Queen Cattle King has all kinds of scratches on the bolsters, and they are heat-treated 416 ss….either you are daintifying that knife….or I use mine like a caveman….lol.:D

I also reserve the right front pocket for knives and I have a McGizmo clipped as well. But, inside is where my little slippie is, with nothing else.

It was a big step for me to carry M.O.P. in my pocket, but after years of conditioning myself to keeping keys and change and anything else out of that pocket and after carrying this for around 5 or 6 months, there really is not eye catching damage.

It also helped that the maker offered a free fluff & buff. (That is what convinced me to give it a try for a while.) It will be a few years before I take him up on the offer, if I ever do. ;).
