Custom Griptilian and Such (Now Featuring the Spyderco Paramilitary 2!)

I own the 556 mini grip which is OK but the full size is my least favorite Benchmade, too plasticky and hollow. Custom G10 scales may help but that bumps the price another 80 bucks...

PM2 is great love it for EDC. Keep in mind the tip is very thin, it's just begging to snap off if you pry with it and Spyderco does not replace blades. I would almost suggest the Manix 2 instead for hard use.

Why not look at some of the other Benchmade offerings if you like the Axis lock? So many great choices with full liners and G10...

Blade play issues? That just made the decision for me a little easier. Ritter Grip it is. :D

Blade play? Never heard of it. But really that's a risk you run with any production knife. I wouldn't let a few reports of slightly less than perfect examples of massively popular models dissuade you from getting one for yourself, especially from companies like Benchmade and Spyderco. Both knives are great designs (I have the mini Ritter and a PM2) and let me be the first one to say get them both!

But if you just HAVE to pick one, I would focus on the blade style. As rushane pointed out, the PM2's tip can be a bit fragile, though that fine tip is one of the reasons I like it so much. As long as you don't abuse it, the PM2 has the better blade shape in my opinion. The Ritter blade feels more stout at the tip (even on the mini) and is still a very good slicer. Both have great locks and great ergos, though if you prefer G10 the PM2 wins. I do as well, though I gotta say I find the Grip handle (whatever fancy plastic it is) actually feels pretty good.

I think you really just need to spend some time fondling both at this amazing shop you speak of and just see which one feels better to you. And maybe take me with you?

I will try out all the the knives at the shop. It's not really a shop - the guy who owns it is a distributor and you can't buy any of the knives right there. He distributes knives to the IDF. He has knives and some other weapons in display cases which (since I'm special) I'm allowed to remove to play with the knives.

Make sure to try them in your pocket too. How they carry in your pocket is a big part of what makes a good edc.

I'd just go with a 710 and be done with it. No customizing necessary.
