Recommendation? Custom Griptilian for dad. Help w/ steel choice

it sounds to me that the way you customize it may be more important than the steel choice. Benchmade does a fine job with their steel. I like the m4 for hard use. But if you want it to keep a fine edge longest, then m4 would be a great choice since benchmade heat treats it harder than the other steels you are considering, plus it is very tough. s30v though is also sufficiently tough for most uses. I have never had it chip on me. Here is a quote directly from Benchmade's website: CPM-M4 is an American-made powdered steel and is the toughest available. Able to handle virtually any task, it excels in edge retention and wear resistance but requires cleaning to keep it corrosion free as it is not stainless.

This thread made me pop my grip in m4 in my pocket today.

Love mine, it's a great knife and I find the BM m4 to be easier to maintain than my spyderco m4. Mine is coated as well and i haven't had any rusting issues. But I'll wipe my down with mineral oil from time to time.

This thread made me put my Ritter Grip with m390 inside my pocket today after I touched up the edge. Great knife.
