I will have my Ed Fowler pronghorn soon and then a hunter from Bob Hollar (about 3 months)and one from Audra Draper (about 10 months). I also have two Geno Denning hunters.

My question is : Who should I look at next?

I am not looking for fancy hunters, just solid ones. I have grown to like the look of a forged blade but stock removal works for me if it is done right (ie. the Geno Denning hunters).

I obviously can not use them all at the same time but I will most likely use each a few times (except the Fowler which may become my "regular" hunter) so function is key.

Wegner/Simonich Talonite fixed-blade hunter is about as good as it gets for a user, plus no worries with rust or corrosion. Otherwise any ABS Mastersmith, Blackwood, Simonich, Dozier & others...

Will soon receive my first Denning and am anxious to see what all the fuss is about. I really like the looks of Wayne Hendrix' work (I think www.arizonacustomknives.com still has one). I find them similar to GenO's in form. A Dozier is next on my list personally. I am also interested in a Matt Lamey hunter as I am partial to forged carbon steel and Matt will use about anything else including D2 and 3V.

I've got a Lamey Pearl River D2 hunter and the quality is top notch. I can't wait to try this one out.

I would have to concur with all the opinions above - each of them makes great hunters. Blackwood's are a great mix of function and form - very nice in stock removal area - the ABS smiths are turning out phenomenal forged hunters as you know - can't go wrong here anywhere.

Wayne Hendryx is another great choice - have one of his & is excellent especially considering cost - like Denning he is a student of George Herron & learned his lessons well - value received for cost is very high. Matt Lamey is another one you can't go wrong with - awesome work at great price.

Shame on me for not chiming in here about Neil Blackwood. Outstanding hunters; in fact a Blackwood Small Hunter dressed out my six point last fall. Great knife; flawless workmanship and pretty to boot! And Neil is a blast to do business with. You can't go wrong with a Blackwood.

RJ, let me start off by saying that if I just had the knives that you have on order I could die a happy man. I don't think you're ever going to find a better user than the Fowler, but if you're still looking I'll play along. Using your criteria, "solid" and "done right" along the lines of a Denning/Loveless style Hunter I would like to suggest you look at Integral Hunters. The makers that come to mind would be;

Wow, it looks like I really need to look at alot of makers. I know it's hard work looking at knives, but someone has to do it

.

I have always liked integrals and maybe this is my excuse to get a knife from Ricardo Velarde and/or Steve Johnson.

Dave, a Loveless would be great, but they are a bit out of my price range right now.

Corbet Sigman makes collector , utility and working hunter lines of knives by stock removal. there is no better work than Corbet's. Dick

RJ,

As stated above, you can't go wrong with any of the makers listed in this post. I enjoy my Denning and Blackwood knives a lot, but have discovered I am a forged guy at heart with a lust for stag hunters.

I take great pride in my Massey and Newton hunters and my newest prize is a Mike Williams red stag piece that I am infatuated with

Caffrey, Ellis and Fisk are names on my to-get list, and I'm sure I will love their blades as well.

Take care and let us know what you decide on.

Well this post has proven to be extremely painful to my wallet. As a result I am getting a Wayne Hendrix hunter, I may order a Velarde integral hunter, and I am contacting Dave Ellis to see what I can get from him.

RJ, here is an example of what you can get from Dave:

You will not regret working with Dave - a great maker and a nicer person you will not find - the interaction & friendship I made with Dave has been every bit as rewarding as the knife above & any future(hint! hint! if you're around, Dave) acquisitions.

Have a nice day!

Rich,

Arizona Custom Knives just put up a killer hunter from Keith Kilby, Mastersmith. Features a forged 52100 blade (3 1/2") with black micarta slabs and stainless bolster. Awesome little knife. Price is right as well.
