Custom kitchen knives arrived!! (Pic Heavy)

Ndog, the original drawing had a bit more of a "hump" on the front of the blade, which was intended to add some extra steel right up at the front of the blade. I just realized I forgot to include specs on the Cleavers, so I'll edit the original post. I will tell you right now though that they are much more balanced than you'd think, since they have nice thick tangs.

Bawanna, I like that idea, but don't think that last inch or 2 would be very useful radiused. Perhaps adding a gentle curve to the whole blade, almost like an ulu but not to such an extreme. I'm thinking that could be a whole nuther design, almost like a combo skinner/cleaver. A solid game processing knife. I'll put some thought into that one. For now, the Chef's knife was more designed for that type of rocking cut, since I had designed the edge to be flat after the curve from the tip. I may redraw this one at some point in the future too, but for now all it needs is fullers and it'll be totally perfect.

Also Bawanna, I kinda agree but disagree on the IBBBs. I think they look better with the short handle, and are more carry friendly, but I like the longer handle for use. I'm all about options. Often at work I use my Bowie to "trim" a plant before putting in a trash bag. When a cane is 2" thick, it's nice to be able to slide back on the handle and get a little extra leverage. My goal is to get far enough through the plant in one strike to be able to break it. So far, only Mass Cane's can handle more than one chop.

Bookie, I must say, the inscription is by far my favorite part. Not only because oh how cool the message is, but also because it was the only part of the knives that I truly had no input on. A leap of faith if you will.

I love these knives so much, I'll likely get a "version 2" of both, if/when they get made :)

Great knives! Looking cool and useful at the same time.
I can't believe you got the XXXX just like on your drawing.
They must have thought: 'strange, but if that's what he wants we will be happy to do that for him'.
:-))

SG: I see what you mean on the "hump". Your drawing does show a bit more weight on the front. You had it all thought out! Great job. I would think there would be enough interest in them blades to do a run at least. We will see what the boss decides to do;)

Jens, I laughed when I saw the X's on the blade. Steve Tall totally called that one in the original thread! Luckily it had the script too, or my laughing wouldn't have lasted long..

Ndog, thanks man! I appreciate it. My fingers are crossed for a run of them. I would consider it an honor to see my design produced :)

Jaymo, not sure if it's kosher to post prices on customs, but I will say that they were extremely reasonable and no more than DOTD blades of similar size. I was expecting them to cost more. And Auntie even ended up shipping them for less than it cost her to ship. She never ceases to amaze me!

Feeling industrious after finishing Cul's sheaths, I decided to whip up some pants for the Chef's Knife and one of the Cleavers, #1. I had picked up some clear Holstex (same stuff as Kydex, just different brand) a while back for cheap, since it was B-stock. One of the edges was all chipped and rough, but 90+% good material for 50% price is hard to beat.

I did the Chef's knife on Friday, and the Cleaver today. I'm using a single IWB loop on each sheath. I'm really using them more like a combo dangler/beltloop though.

Also, over the weekend I made some fresh butter, using a cordless drill of course. It's something my brother and I started doing last summer. We usually separate part of our fresh butter and use it to make garlic & herb butter, which is basically just the butter with garlic, rosemary, and olive oil added. As you might have guessed, I decided to use the Chef's Knife to cut up the garlic and rosemary. And by cut up I mean mince. It worked wonderfully, and would have been even better on a cutting board rather than a paper plate..

I never heard of clear kydex before, that's kind of cool. Would be especially cool for kitchen type knives where you could see what was inside so you could grab the right knife.

Great pix and post, thank you for sharing

Thanks BB and Yangdu!

Bawanna, I didn't know about the clear stuff til I saw the b-stock for cheap. I immediately knew I wanted it for my kitchen knives, and I ordered this stuff probably at the end of last summer. Having said that, I was originally thinking it'd be good to check for rust spots on such corrosion-prone blades, being used in the kitchen an all. But being able to see what's in there is also a plus.

Thats awesome job SG! I havent seen the clear stuff either but what a great idea for the kitchen! You got that Kydex process down man. Very fine work:thumbup:

David: What a cool blade man! That one is on my watch list for sure. That thing is a monster!
