Custom Knife Display Stands - Don Hanson Bowie Stand done

Very impressive, Mark. Great way to display these pieces. Your Williams hunter looks good with the presentation side mount, and all five look cool together in your office.

Very nice job! I have one personal rule, or preference- none of the blade should be obscured in a display stand. The first display may be helped, to lessen the distraction, darken the flat area of the stag (on top) where the tip of the blade rests. - it should not stand out as more visually pronounced than the object it is meaning to display.

Now that they are finished, I guess there's not too much reason to make a suggestion, but in the future you might think about eliminating the antler braces and replacing them with an old gnarly pieces of wood that matches the base. It might turn out to be a more harmonious composition. However, they look darned good on display, well done! (and great knives too!)

Thanks for the comments and suggestions.

2knife: I hear what your saying about obscuring a small part of the blade, but in most cases the base for the blade serves both visual and functional purpose. It stabilizes the entire knife but from sliding forward and from tilting side to side. I like your suggestion of darkening the base to reduce the contrast and make less noticeable.

David: thanks for suggestion. my next one I'm trying to use only gnarly wood to support. I tried a couple different ways to do that on the JR Cook hunter but ended up going back to antler.

These are truly wonderful: Artistic, natural and very creative. You are also an artist.

I'm impressed at your endless supply of figural driftwood. Where are you acquiring these monuments??!

Coop

Coop, it may surprise to learn where I buy these gnarly pieces of driftwood - major pet stores. Petco and Petsmart sells MOPANI drift wood. It is an African hardwood that is dense and gnarly. Also Malaysian driftwood or grape vine drift wood. They are used in aquariums for reptiles. You can also buy it online ebay etc. I look for it every time I go get dog food and I buy it whenever I find a cool piece.

Started another display stand and took a couple pics of WIP. In part based on some of the comments I decided to keep this one simple. It is for a DLisch bowie that itself has a lot of figure in both handle and blade. So, this is maple with walnut trim for a base. Still trying to decide how I want to prop up the knife, perhaps an angled block of walnut with a rare earth magnet for the blade and a slightly taller piece of walnut to hold the handle (no antlers on this one).

Mark,
These displays are stunning. Thank you for adding the WIP - knife stands may soon end up on Bob's "to do" list. Did you also make the display box at Bing's table in Arkansas for the set of BingaLors?

Yes ma'am I did. Thanks for the kind words. I am planning to make one (maybe two) of those display boxes for the CKCA dinner at Blade Show to give away as door prizes. thought it might be something that both collectors and makers could use and appreciate.

Still a work in progress but I like using these R.E. magnets. Allows the knife to appear suspended and barely held in place. In reality you can turn this upside down and it won't fall off. Much work to do on the finish.

I finished the stand for the DLisch Ironwood Bowie. I welcome comments and critique.

Already started on another for the Hanson Walrus ivory bowie: This one is similar but trimmed in black wenge and a little different style.

And picked up a few new pieces of Mopani driftwood for future projects.

Mark, What better way to show off that beautiful knife. It is obvious you have a gift there my friend.

(By the way I have the pic of the BingaLor display you made, on my screen saver at work.)

Thank you for sharing, you have good taste for sure and made a beautiful omage to those super knives!!

Mark that is really a nice stand thank you I am thrilled that the knife has such a nice Home and display stand

These displays all look great and the knives are incredible too. I really love the latest one for the DLIsch Ironwood Bowie.

Btw I just saw this thread for the first time. Did you ever get the lighting figured out? I do commercial and industrial lighting for my day job so if you still have lighting questions I might be able to offer some input.
