I'm thinking of ordering a custom knife from one of the knife makers on this site to use as a daily carry. Do to the cost would this be a crazy thing to do?

Nah man. It's all up to you. I carry a $300 EDC. Some guys carry ones in the thousands. Just up to you. I'm for it though.

I can't speak to EDC, but some of us have, and continue to do so, regularly carried custom knives. Bose, Erickson, Hampton, Oeser, you name it. It all depends on what you want out of your knives.

While not a true custom, I carry a Case Tribal Spear every day. I'm getting a Wiseman lg barlow, and getting on the list for a Cramer LC, both will be EDC's. I don't see anything wrong with it.

I also EDC a damascus peanut.

I also have an Oeser Zulu.

I have a number of custom knives to choose from, and carry and use at least one everyday. If you see something you like, or have an idea, call the maker and talk about it with him. Any of the knife makers that post on this forum could make something that you would be proud to own and carry. I won't try and list them as I'd miss someone for sure.

I'm all for it too. The most expensive traditional knife I carry cost me $500. I rotate a couple others that were in the $300 range.

A small part of me thinks that they are too nice to use but a much larger part of me knows that I didn't buy them to turn around and sell them. Since I don't plan on selling them there is really no reason why I should not carry them.

I get a lot of pleasure out of carrying and using those knives. They are all fine specimens and I know that I'm lucky to own them. Might as well give them the pocket time they deserve.

Additionally, I don't know of any knife maker that doesn't prefer that their knives get used. There might be some, just none that I know of.

The only problem I have with using my custom knives (and it's not a problem really) is that my other less expensive knives don't get much attention anymore.

It's a personal decision that only you can make but I say go for it!

I typically carry a custom every day.

I usually carry something smaller to my office and carry the larger ones on weekends.

I don't really see the point in owning them if I'm not going to carry them.

If you can afford to buy it...why not use it? Life is too short to not enjoy.

I'll never be able to afford one, but if I had one, it would be carried on special occasions, not as an edc. Like the post above, it depends on personal variables that only you can answer.

I carry a Custom everyday... I mean every day! So often, that I often forget to picture it in the traditional forums. Now the real question... Do I use it everyday? Answer: no. I do want to keep it in as perfect shape as I can. It rides with me everyday in a leather "cow hair lined" belt sheath. When I do use it... I know my maker will fix all fixable problems I create. yes, that means I carry a user with me everyday as well. Maybe I am crazy and maybe this is just me... but there it is from one guy.

Thanks Brett - you took my thoughts out of my head and posted them into the internet...

It really depends on everyone´s personal variables and the money is a factor to think about. I won´t afford one, but if I could - I would carry it for holidays like christmas, birthdays etc etc etc.

I'm all for it and do so myself almost every day.

I'm not a knife collector, amassing 10, 20, or 30 knives holds very little appeal to me. A small handful is all I need and I prefer to carry just one or two at the most. I have an Erickson stag EDC pattern (single spear blade on a trapper style frame, see my avatar) that you will find in my pocket most days...when it's not there you'll typically just find a SAK Pioneer because I'm expecting to need the additional tools and didn't feel like carrying two knives.

Sure, it's an expensive knife...but if you're going to spend that much on a knife then I think you should thoroughly enjoy it to the fullest, and the only way to do that (to my mind) is to carry and use it. It's taken me a while to come to this realization but a knife in a drawer just doesn't make me happy in the long run, just seems like a waste of money for me....but I don't have that collector mindset that some people have.

I have new 2-blade from Ken coming in the near future, my first custom ordered multi-blade, and the day it arrives it will be dropped into my pocket without hesitation (yes, I'll make sure that pocket is empty first though). That will make two custom Ericksons and a handful of Alox SAKs....and that is enough for me. I will carry and use them and be happy. I do have some GECs right now but I plan on selling all but my old beater #15 which I'll toss in my tool box.

No question for me, I have couple of customs on my rotation and few old ones that are not cheap at all. I believe that knives are made to use, but in the end it depends on you.

No one can say what wprks best for you, what makes you happier, so it's your call.
But if you're wondering how many of us carry a custom knife daily, count me in :)
Picture for the thread ;)

Yup, +1 on what he said. :)

I carry mine. That's why I bought 'em.

I carry a custom or high end or rare production on a daily basis. Go for it. Plus you can sometimes get very lucky picking up a custom for shorter money in the Exchange. Here is one I got there. Ken Coats. Great little knife.

Not crazy at all. If you can afford to buy one, you can afford to carry it. I've had a few and have carried them all at times, just not everyday. I have too many knives I like, to carry the same few very often.
