Custom Knife HT ovens

I didn't say you're ripping people off, but you come off like you're here to make a buck. There are several great vendors that are regulars here on BF that don't peddle themselves as hard as you do and these are knifemaking suppliers like AKS, Midwest and Beamont. At some point a person stops being a friendly guy who happens to have something to sell and ends up being a peddler.

I dont in any way want to come across like that at all because i am a friendly guy. Wont happen agen. Im out

Whoa Jarod, you're one of the good guys as far as I can tell. Don't be quick to take honest feedback from one person too harshly. If you get the same message generally, then that might be another thing. :)

I've only been back here for a short time after a lengthy absence, so there are a lot of members I don't know, and Acrid Saint is one of them. I didn't take his comment as being rude. One thing to remember is how much of communication is nonverbal. It's easy to take written communication in a way other than it was intended. This seemed as much conversational as critical to me.

My brother and I have had some hellacious political exchanges via email lately, with our sister mostly just sitting back aghast. If you didn't know us well and watch us have those conversations in person, you'd be freaked too! Regardless how harsh we might write, we have a reasonable respect for each other - you'd just never know it based soley on our political emails! :D

So all I'm suggesting is to think about how all of the ideas rolling off your brain seem to this one person. You responded properly, except in my opinion for the part about getting out. Don't let that stop you from tossing ideas off and getting feedback from your forum partners. I've always enjoyed what you had to say and the way you said it. Just my .02 of course.

ok then, i'm back in :D. I just don't want to be taken as someone thats onley on this forum to make a quick buck. as funny as it may sound the people on here have helped me through difficult times and this forum means a lot to me.

JT,
I am with Nick. You need to get one thing completely done and mastered before you jump to the next.
Work on the girlfriend, the new shop, the JT wrap, the girlfriend, the tang stamps, the new job, the girlfriend, the first amendment knives, the knife production, ....and spend some time with the new girlfriend. If you have too much going on to do all that....send me the girlfriend.

Just an idea. Also i would give up everything on that list befor the girlfriend, sory stacy.

Good answer!!! ;)

Disclaimer: I'm not an electrician....

...but my understanding is that an outlet should only be loaded to 80% of it's rated breaker capacity. That would mean you would have to have about a 23 amp breaker - and is standard 14/2 even rated for that?

You don't want to burn down someone's house.

I think 15 amp breakers are pretty standard so if you are trying to make it useable for Joe average on 110, you would be looking at max 12 amps - 1320 watts.

Maybe still doable with a small enough chamber. Any electricians following this?

Rob!

I don't know about electricity or peddling, but for what I do a small HT oven
4x4x18 or 4x5x12 that could reach those temps, run on 110, was affordable, and already made or DIY would be great. I haven't made any knives over 9 in. long or so and since I send my blades out for professional HT only being able to do one at a time wouldn't bother me to much.

you know you never think you need that extra size till you start thinking dam i could make (next knife dream) if i just had a bigger kiln

me i got a 220v 18 inch even heat and now i want a 4wide 5 tall 36 long 220 volt for "other projects"

also if your running temps at the over 1600F range its really wasteful to run just one blade at a time. one more point is most steels that you quench from over 1800 should have a cryo to help them reach full conversion so you need to least thing dry ice . but better yet LN and thats set up can cast a few bucks in its own right

oo the fun of heat treat at the house
think i got out of it for about $1500 not counting the LN fills

hay butch, where should i look for LN. i got a tank from a thrift shop (Thay did not know what it was for, maybe to keep milk cold ;)) for 15 bucks. it holds 10 Leaters and looks allmost new. I have been wanting to fill it but dont know where to look.

i went to the local shop and thay had no idea what i was talking about. thay said somthing about the i could not keep it as a liquid and thay would just have to give me presurized nitrogen. then i showed them my tank and there like o so how are we sapost to put presurized gass in that. im like you dumb ass it holds liquid. there like um thats not legal for you to own nitrogen in a liquid forum, im like i know tons of knife makers that do. then there like well i will have to send your tank to the city to have it presure tested. im like o man here we go agen, i puled the top off and told them that its not a presure vesel but a vacume insulated contaner MADE to hold liquid nitrogen at no presure. he was like well let me check and see what we can do. he then tells me that he would have to send my tank to the city to have it filled if it is legal but the driver might not want to drive it back down because its not sealed. he then askes me if i have a way to compleatley seal it so nothing leakes out. im like do you want it to explode because thats whats going to hapen. I could not take it any more and told him niceley that i was going to check some other places. I felt like there was a hidden camera filming me and thay where going to jump out and say your on canded camera.

If there is a large Dairy near you check with them as they often use
A.I. on thier cows and semen is stored in LN. The local
Ag Agent might be helpful as well

i was getting mine at airgas till i found a welding supply that had LN in the town closer (was a 30 mile one way till i found new shop)

One other note about HT ovens. I would like one to be expandable in length. I may finally get around to making that real sword!
Lynn

Stacy's recommendation was my second suggestion.

The local Airgas wasn't very helpful for me. One of the other, smaller shops was very helpful and have a fair price as well. They all thought it was really cool what I was using it for.

Sorry to hear you got the run-around from somebody that obviously doesn't know what he's talking about. :grumpy:

well i found a place just down the street that has it. i called them and it was 3.93 a leter. so i show up and talk to the guy and he asks what im using it for and we start talking knives. iand i tell him that my tank is a 10 leter but i onley need 5 because i just dooing a few knives. so he starts filling it and i ask him how he knowns how much he is putting in. he says he just has to juge by looking as there is not a gage. so we are talking and he looks in the tank and says ah just a little more. so then he pulls it out and says there you go. i look in and see thats its full and i tell him that its all the way full and he looks in the tank and says ah looks like 5 leters to me with a grin :D. so i got 10 for the price of 5 and to boot he wants me to bring some of my knives in so he can see what i can do. i told him i would be back. supper supper nice guy.

Imagine how cheap it would be by the liter.
Stacy

Just yanking your chain, JT. Glad you found a good source.
Now forget about the HT ovens, make some knives.... and kiss that girl.
