Custom knife Makers' Priorities

The Blade Show 2001 is over. I know most, if not, custom makers who had their wares displayed at the show sought to promote, quite tangibly, their creations to the enthusiasts the world over.

We who reside in all parts of the globe do eventually get to hear or see in magazines the adjudged top knives. Even the lesser known genuises get their share of glory in other ways.

So that brings me to the question: What goes on in the minds of these makers at blade show?

I know they would probably be thinking of entertaining more orders, climbing up further and more rapidly up the ladder of success, getting due recognition for their ingenuity and reaping monetary rewards which in most cases are overdue.

Besides all these mundane matters, what else stimulate the grey matter of our esteemed fellow brethern in steel?

Are they thinking of elevating the art of knife-making a few levels beyond the current stage? Do they want their names to be etched on the walls of the Knife Hall of Fame? Do they want to be remembered at all? Or do they want their knives to speak for them?

Some perhaps may seek just to invoke the verbal expression; "There's no need for signature, this knife is made by so-and-so. His trademark is unmistakable. His creation unique. No one else has been able to copy his style."

Pray tell.
