My breakdown was
Dealer - 8
Collector - 8
Maker - 7
Between dealers and collectors there's usually more of an opportunity to find what you want at a price you like to satisfy any "gotta have one now" urges, which I fight on pretty much a daily basis. Dealing directly with the makers is nice in that no one else is going to be able to tell you more about the knife and its process than the maker himself/herself. If it's a case where they're making something to your requested custom specs you may feel like you have a greater investment in the knife and, subsequently, more pride in it once it's in your hands. Getting to know the makers and learning more about knives and knifemaking through that interaction is extremely helpful, because I think anything you can take in that will help to expand and/or refine your perspectives will only benefit you in the long run for collecting.
