I never been to the knife show so please give me pointers...

Hope they wont have metal detectors there :)

Matt

ps.

oh yeah and Im sorry if this is posted in wrong place I'm still learning the way of the bladeforums...

LOTS of NJ guys. I'll be there Saturday. The best place for this is Community Center. We should have something on it there already.

When you get there, relax, pay your money, go on in, wander around, smile at the nice knifemakers! It's a long day for them and they want you to be happy they're there! :D

You will be happy ... beautiful knives. You don't have to get hung up on what to buy. The idea is to familiarize yourself with the different styles, and talking with the makers is a great way to learn.

There will be a rotating group of knife knuts in lobby alongside the showroom, so just walk up and introduce yourself. We are always glad to meet new guys.

Metal detectors? What are metal detectors?

Metal dectors are there so to make sure that you enter and leave with a knife. =D
Where in the lobby will you guys be? Also, how do I make sure it's the correct group?

I can only make it on Sunday. Is the third day usually worthwhile or are things pretty well wrapped up by then?

I will be there on Sat. Anybody know if CRK will be there? I'm thinking about picking up a Sebenza and wouldn't mind just walking out with one rather then ordering.

AFAIK, CRK will not be there. Two years ago was his last visit, which apparently did not do will for sales of his knives. But DEALERS will probably have some CRK product.

I've got a tanto Sebenza in my pocket right now! :) I'll probably be carrying it at the show.

The third day is still the show. There are always complaints that minutes after the doors open on the first day, the best knives have all been bought but there are usually a few good ones left to look at anyway.

I'm hoping Saturday is the best day for seeing more of us around, with people working Friday, and Sunday winding down. But every day I've been at shows, there's always knives and always knife knuts.

As I recall, the lobby at this place is a smaller area, but it's easy enough to find. Every group is the right group. Ask if it's Bladeforums guys and the chances are, someone will say yes, even if it's only me. :D

I am planning on being there. Depends on my work schedule, but right now it looks like Friday is the best day for me. Get out of school around 12, and take the train straight there. Saturdays I usually am working until at least 5:00 :(, oh well. But I should be able to get there early to buy up all the best knives, hahaha   .

Tips? Bring money, and lots of it. :D Really though it is cool to go just to see all the nice knives that are being made, and talk with fellow knuts. I have a problem though, that I can NEVER leave a show without buying something. Even when I go planning to just look around, and maybe buy something cheap, I end up buying a knife that just calls my name.

He did just fine that show. Sat right behind Lum so I know this. He and Steve D'lack just don't get along.

Since I work in Greenwich Village, I'll take Friday afternoon off and be at the show when the doors open at noon. The show is a wonderful opportunity to meet and talk with fellow knifenuts and some outstanding knifemakers, to handle cutlery objects of desire you may have only seen in magazines and/or on the Internet, and to make a purchase or two. All of the makers and dealers I spoke to last year were very friendly and happy to answer any and all questions. Last year, I went on Friday and on Sunday, and returning on Sunday certainly was worthwhile. It seemed that not many makers and dealers were gone on Sunday.

What's admission again? 10$? I wont be buying anything since I only have 100$ or so to burn, but it'll be nice to see some of you

I think it's $15. The last thing I bought at a show was a double-sided flat Spyderco sharpener. Just for the memories :)

Any knives that I can pick up for under 100$? (spyderco said cash with 3 ids only @ ECCKS, so I just left their booth after playing with the Chinook II)
Prices:
One Day Pass - $15.00
Three Day Pass - $20.00
3 Day pass here, since I'll go Fri and Sat

I went last year, Pretty good show. I bought a Bud Nealy pesh Kabz. The show was in 2 connected banquet rooms. One had windows on 2 sides so it was bright and well lit, the other had few or no windows and was poorly lit. I met a few makers whose stuff I really like, Pat Crawford, Bob Terzuola, Bud Nealy. All in all a pretty good show. I am more used to Gun and Knife shows, but they don't feature as many custom makers.

I have to say I was a little under impressed by Manhattan. Maybe you have to like shopping a lot more than I do. I think the Detroit Institute of Arts has a better collection than the Metropolitan Museum of Art. And how is it possible that a Cheeseburger and a glass of beer costs $21 but I can buy a rolex watch for $5 ????? Street vendors were everywhere in the times square area.

Mass transit in Manhattan is top notch. I don't know how New Yorkers tolerate the parking fees. A garage around the corner from my hotel was $7.50 a HALF hour, but T-shirts were 6 for $10!

I went in to a party store a block from my hotel to get a 2 litre bottle of coke. The woman in line ahead of me has the same thing, the guy behind the counter tells her $2. I get up to the counter he says $3, I say wait a minute, you told her $2, He says Ok $2

The pizza in NY was good, Cable tv in my hotel sucked.

And what is the deal with Duane Reade and Starbucks?

GarageBoy,
You needed 3 ID's to buy a knife?? Never happened to me, just had them cash or plastic and walk away. As for something for a budget, maybe a Dick Atkinson folder. I don't know about under $100, but they are sure right in that area, for a custom made frame lock with titanium fram and 440C, even some filework!

Ilovetoolsteel,
Don't get me started on Duane Reade. Used to work for them, they are one of the most misreable companies I can think of when it comes to taking care of employees. Hopefully they will all be closing down soon! ;)

Esav,
No, not BudK! Actually I think the last thing I bought at a show was a Crawford neck knife. I think I will be looking into some folders this time around, even if I can't afford one right now. :)

I stand corrected. thanks. The notion of CRK not selling well never sat well with me and remained a curiosity.

Shows, for me, are initially like the frenzy of a horse race. Don't know which table to visit first; doing the locating of target tables on the hand-out map; jockeying for position; then not being too picky about what your handling because the next guy might snap it up, but then you might buy it and then the maker pulls something superior out of the bag. Walk to your next destination and then (DOH!) there's something else that you now don't have the funds for! This takes more concentration than work, which is why I rationalize going there on Friday.
