Custom knife show in NYC

I went to the NY show one year, and could only go Sunday. Although it was clear that a lot of people had already sold their stuff, there were still many more knives there (that I wanted) than I couod afford. Also, meeting the makers was just great. Didn't matter if you weren't planning on buying--they always let you look and handle the knives, and were always willing to discuss anything you had on your mind. Nicest group of people I ever met.

I found the show well worth the entrance fee. After all, someone has to pay for that place, and if it all falls on the makers, we'll just end up paying more for the knives. I am really sorry that I can't make it this year.

I hear some top Canadian makers will be there, notably Wally Hayes. I wish I could go. I can't.

I have to say I was a little under impressed by Manhattan. Maybe you have to like shopping a lot more than I do. I think the Detroit Institute of Arts has a better collection than the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Manhattan is about the amount of money that gets generated every business day. That and the insane amount of food and culture that can had at any given time. The shopping is OK. The Met is only one of many many museums. Add them all up and I doubt the Detroit IoA's collection can compare.

And how is it possible that a Cheeseburger and a glass of beer costs $21 but I can buy a rolex watch for $5 ????? Street vendors were everywhere in the times square area.
One is served surrounded by priceless pieces of art (called ambiance, which isn't cheap in Manhattan), the other are fakes. The vendors are prime examples of that money making machine mentioned above.

You needed 3 ID's to buy a knife?? Never happened to me, just had them cash or plastic and walk away.
They do that if you look under 18 and are trying to buy it without an adult present.

Anyway here's my ugly mug so if you see me stop by and say hi. I usually respond to Polak or Matt or Medic and I run into direction of screaming.

I will probably be wearing my EMT work shirt...

I will be there on Friday. I was really hoping I can meet CRK but I guess that's not happening. I'm kind of glad I didn't go out and buy all the expensive fixed blade. I will handle a variety of knives and see what fits best.

I went last year, Pretty good show. I bought a Bud Nealy pesh Kabz. The show was in 2 connected banquet rooms. One had windows on 2 sides so it was bright and well lit, the other had few or no windows and was poorly lit. I met a few makers whose stuff I really like, Pat Crawford, Bob Terzuola, Bud Nealy. All in all a pretty good show. I am more used to Gun and Knife shows, but they don't feature as many custom makers.

I am indigenous to NYC and always try to make it to the show. Its a great time to check out and handle alot of the stuff we see online. Meeting and hanging out with the makers is also fun.

Unimpressed with manhattan, well, thats because you have only been to the tourist centers and hotel district. If you think about it, those areas are expensive and unimpressive in any city in any part of the world.

Manhattan is a large island with a lot of different neighborhoods. But all that translates into is food, drink, clubbing, bar hopping and shopping. Don't quote me, but I think 60% of the local population is female!

Mass transit in Manhattan is top notch. I don't know how New Yorkers tolerate the parking fees. A garage around the corner from my hotel was $7.50 a HALF hour, but T-shirts were 6 for $10!

Parking is in high demand, the t-shirts aren't. (Don't buy them, they fall apart after a few washes if not the first wash.)

There are tens of thousands of people who work in that part of manhattan that make hundreds of thousands of dollars a year. There are hundreds of people who work in manhattan that make millions of dollars annually, scores that make tens of millions and a few that make hundreds of millions annually.

So, for the most part, they pay the parking fees. The rest of us take the train.

I went in to a party store a block from my hotel to get a 2 litre bottle of coke. The woman in line ahead of me has the same thing, the guy behind the counter tells her $2. I get up to the counter he says $3, I say wait a minute, you told her $2, He says Ok $2

Prices for things are jacked up around the Hotels. Not much you can do about that. Buy your drinks and such at Duane Reade. Cheap stuff, served with attitude and some pain thrown in.

The odd thing was the Crawfords and Dozier didn't mind me around and would have accepted cash if I had

Gotta love those Southern makers. They have their priorities right.

When you know a good thing, don' t go public with it ... ;)
Hey. Does Bob Dozier know what you're doing when he's not at the table??? ;)

Can anybody tell me, are those Dozier knives any good?
Bob's knives are solid workhorses. Not much on the looks, but you can depend on them.

About the best D2 I ever seen...
thin for excellent cutting performance. Not for the pryers though.

So what can we expect to see there? Will it be all customs or will there be dealers with production knives too? You know the general gun show stuff? I will be happy one way or the other but the more stuff the happier I am. :D

Tony- err, almost. But Esav- it went right over your head!

Actually, if an exhibitor is willing to sell you a knife without hassling for i.d. it' s a good thing for the buyer. Better to not make it (too) public. ;)

Dozier knives? Yeah, I heard they are pretty good. :) ;) :D
