I am interested in getting a custom version of one of my favorite knives, I'm not quite happy with the blade steel (420hc) So are there any makers that do integral daggers? Is damascus steel even possible for my price range? ($250-$300) This is a dive knife so stainless is a must. I am also open to suggestions.

I am far from an expert and I don't even know the rules of forging bit I am almost sure you can't forge stainless and get the layered look. May be able to etch a pattern but don't know.

Just realized, why am I posting if i dont know anything? Crazy world.

I cant give you knifemaking advice but I can point you to those that can. Try contacting one of the knifemakers from the forum linked above, they will definately be able to help you out.

How is 420HC letting you down? I ask because I've never seen a dive knife get the kind of use where edge retention is much of an issue, so I'm assuming you're looking for better corrosion resistance, in which case I doubt even a stainless damascus pattern would be your best choice as there are funky nitrogen steels and titanium knives and such that will outperform all the usual knife steels.

I also wonder what the problem is with properly heat treated 420HC? Works fine for Buck (I own five of their 420HC knives with no issues or complaints).

CSG CSG Buck uses the Paul Bos heat treat. I don't think Tekna does. unwisefool unwisefool I would like something unique and nice to look at but fully functional. I like the look of damascus. Quick question though, Is damascus easier to snap than a solid steel due to the layered construction?

Regular Damascus CAN be used for a dive knife, I'm just not aware of anyone doing it. And it would require very diligent maintenance. Stainless Damascus is a possibility. You might look at finding a piece of stainless Damascus bar-stock steel, then having someone who knows good heat-treatment to turn it into a knife for you. But, I think that finding what you are looking for in a production knife might be difficult.

unwisefool unwisefool what I meant to ask is damascus more brittle than a plain steel. J justjed I am not looking for a production knife, I am trying to get a custom knife based on the design of the knife in the picture. I use a regular Tekna as a boot/snorkel/dive knife and I really like the design. I like the look of damascus steel and I thought it couldn't hurt to ask since this is a knife forum and there are no knife makers in my area.

What you want for a non-rusting dive knife that looks like Damascus is mokume using stainless and (probably) a non-ferrous like bronze. But I think the best integral dive knives are David Boye's. He uses cobalt and I doubt there's anything you could do to break one. But you're going to have to adjust your price point a bit.

Maybe he could make him one in his dendritic cobalt. But yeah, he’d have to slide that cost scale up some.

Tekna actually made those dive knives in Damasteel. I imagine it was very limited.
